ScrumbleShip is the most accurate space combat simulation devised to date. Gather resources, construct a capital ship out of individual blocks, then pilot it with AI or human help against other players.

"Ok, Dirkson, what are we looking at?"
Well, it turns out I was being a little stupid with the light - I was caching light in a cube, rather than in a sphere. This roughly doubled the amount of lighting data I needed to work with.
So since I halved the data, I could double the lighting distance. Now each light brightens a sphere 32 blocks wide. And caching and ship loading have actually become faster overall, since many lights overlap.
A shout-out to this forum post, which inspired me to take a look at lighting: Scrumbleship.com
Not bad for an hour's work!
