Sauerbraten (a.k.a. Cube 2) is a free multiplayer/singleplayer first person shooter, built as a major redesign of the Cube FPS.
Much like the original Cube, the aim of this game is not necessarily to produce the most features & eyecandy possible, but rather to allow map/geometry editing to be done dynamically in-game, to create fun gameplay and an elegant engine.
The engine supporting the game is entirely original in code & design, and its code is Open Source (ZLIB license, read the docs for more on how you can use the engine).
In addition to the FPS game which is in a very playable state, the engine is being used for an RPG which is in the preproduction phase. Additionally, Proper Games ltd are the first to use the engine commercially. dot3 labs is a company started by the creators of sauerbraten that offers commercial support.
Dearest readers, today we would like to present the Tomatenquark project to you. The project coined under the name Tomatenquark is "a community homage to Cube2: Sauerbraten". We symbolize this in our logo. A cube which sprouts new life stemming from its community.
Firstly we would like to outline all the countless hours of work that have been put into the making of Cube2: Sauerbraten. It is an amazing game. Some of us have been active members in the Sauerbraten community for more than a decade.
We set out with a simple goal: "we love Sauerbraten, and would love to see ongoing commitment into the game".
We are proud to present a version of the game which is 100% free, publicly available to anyone, in good shape to be published on Steam.
At this stage we would like to announce the game to the general public. We are currently in the process of publishing the game on Steam and would like your feedback!
It will be possible to download new content in the game directly which will allow creators get their stuff out more quickly and players to enjoy new stuff hassle-free. It is a longstanding issue that we see in the game and we would like to tackle it right away.
If you would like to follow up on the project's roadmap please visit our website or chat with us on Discord!

Time to update! Collect Edition is out!
OpenGL i getting crappy for me! i really want this game to be made with a DX9/11 game development kit!
i hate screen tearing!
I'm not really too sure what you are trying to say, but screen tearing has nothing to do with OpenGL or DirectX. Screen tearing is usually caused when the frame rate of your video card is much higher than what your monitor can support. You can eliminate screen tearing by using V-Sync (adaptive V-Sync is usually best, if available).
Everytime i use v-sync i get a weird square like thing at the left bottom corner of my screen and it is very irritating.
This is very strange indeed. While I can say that it is not caused by V-Sync directly, I also can not say what the cause is. I would guess that you have some 3rd party program that is causing this. This is probably not the most appropriate place for me to try and help you though, but I would suggest that you visit the forum for your video card manufacturer. They all have troubleshooting forums. Chances are that someone over there has encountered your issue and can help you with a solution.
It needs openGL so it's cross-platform. DirectX is Windows-only.
There is an extended version now. It's called Cube: Metalheart
is cube:metalheart the newest version?
It's a standalone mod for Sauerbraten.
