Description
Randy & Manilla is a game in which we discover a mysterious quantum cyber-universe hosted by Net-Cubes that contain virtual worlds with several game genres. A strange kind of virtual environment with the inspiration of Wreck-It Ralph in a later post-apocalyptic era to Ready Player One.
History
The origin of the development of Randy & Manilla emerged as a spontaneous idea in 2013 in Gata de Gorgos town (Spain), when Alex Monfort started developing game projects for public use in GameMaker's Sandbox Yoyogames, started to have an idea for a 3D platform video game under of the codename "Stivex" alongside another game idea called "Cubix" (which was finally made in May 2015).
3 years later, in 2016, this platform game idea started to be developed as a project for a Unity development course from CEAC's university under of the name "Voxel Ferry". However, the project was canceled in March from same year due to various complications in learning to program scripts.
As of summer 2018, the idea of Randy & Manilla began to develop very slowly with the first sketches and written concepts.
Later in September 2019, the first very early indications of the project begin to be shown in public along with a Kickstarter campaign under the highly unlikely target of €100,000. This objective, together with a very notable irrelevance due to its recent announcement, were the factors of the failure of the campaign together with the loss of one of its first collaborators of the project.
However, unlike most games with failed Kickstarter campaigns, Randy & Manilla was able to put up with failure well in order to find new ways to gain financial support. His campaign was resumed on Indiegogo with the goal reduced to €15,000, And unlike Kickstarter, this time it was not "all or nothing", and with only almost 4% of the objective met (as a curiosity, a second attempt was made in 2022 with the goal of 6,000€), it was possible to successfully invest for the development of fundamental parts of the project together with the help of several freelancers from Fiverr.
In May 16 of 2022, Randy has a NES homebrew spin-off called "Randy in Sokobanland".
In July 9 of 2022, Manilla has her secondary game called "Manilla in Pocket Wonder".
From the Christmas 2022 until January 2023, was presented an exclusive Randy & Manilla demo in the Arcade Vintage museum from Ibi (Alicante, Spain).
Between March from 2021 & 2023, Randy & Manilla was the finalist of the Indie Summit from Valencia (one is fully digital, and the other is fully in person).
In the first weekend from October 2023, the game it was presented for the Gata Fira al Carrer with another 6 ofihombre games (Randy in Sokobanland, Manilla in Pocket Wonder, Ofihombre's Alien Storm & Cubix, Fall Mazeball & Damiux Ferrer Dream).
Currently the Randy & Manilla project is still in development with the date set at 2024/25 for the release of the full version.
Originally it was thought that between the years 2022 to 2025 it would be launched in full, however these estimates were complicated to meet because its development was being slower than it should, due to lack of time available, development experience and tight budget (especially due to its financing attempts). In the end it was decided to launch it in Early Access on May 10, 2024.
