Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries is a battlemech piloting simulation and part of the Mechwarrior and Battletech universe unleashed by FASA Studios. In April 2010, MekTek received permission from Microsoft to release the game for free using their MekMatch torrenting program. Now that MekTek has refocused its energies on Heavy Gear, it is up to the community to keep the classic mech piloting tradition alive. This group will also serve as a platform for downloading new content created by the community, including new maps,mods and mech decals, some of which have been hosted by other enthusiast sites.

For those looking for context at this version's release failure: It's a combination of bad circumstance--as the guy that handled most(almost all?) of the mod's data has his house burned down, losing much of their work, stopping their update endavors...and lawyer b.s.--Which is, before said incident, the company that was the legal bridge between Mektek and Microsoft(Smith&Tinker;, I think?), closed down. Requiring them to regain permission/rights to redistribute Mektek MW4Mercs to Microsoft. Which MS kind of just ignored, as they realized it may compete with, at the time, their upcoming MWO.
Damn shame. Would really love to have the MW3-ish, "free-floating reticle" game mechanic.
I don't think his house burned but the founder of Mektek says they still have MP4 backup and the tools...
As I stated, "the guy that handled most of their mod data". Not the founder's. It was stated in the Mektek forums together with the whole "microsoft is not giving us the green light", before they buried it-as they we're "jumping ship" with their now in development hell "HeavyGear".
And even if one of them have the MP4 data, their hands are tied in two reasons. One, they no longer have the right to distribute as with Microsoft's(intentional) silence on the matter(it was wild. MS and PGA we're trying to push off both Mektek and Living Legends because they see those would compete with their MWO). And two, 'Mektek', then called 'StompyBot', now called 'BlocPlay', is in some financial trouble. An unfortunate situation that is not of their making though. But still, that's their current status. also, they want to release MP4 since Heavy Gear was a failure and MWO sucks while the others were a success so they should have pushed PGI already they deserve it
No, I have not have heard of "unofficial mod expansion", wait, I thought that's what Mekpak already is. Are you saying there's another MW4merc 'expansion' pack i have not heard about?
Also, 'should' is not 'would'. As much as I agree with you on having a MW4Merc MP4 release, I don't think it will happen. because, again, legal issues. And Microsoft having more incentive to kill off the older Mechwarrior titles than to uphold them--what with MS currently having MWO, and an MW5Mercs on the works.
You know that maybe they could release it as a fan Mechwarrior mod and to keep it a secret between or even they can release their tools that were made to mod the game in the first place

I wish Mekpak 4 would like show up on the Internet Archives since it is a historically relevant piece of art. The unreleased 4th Microsoft endorsed modder made expansion pack, is up there with SimCity for the NES.
