A recommendation.
1. Use Google. You know what that is right?
2. Look up "Gimp" without the quotes. Remember where all four of those letters are on your keyboard.
3. Navigate your mouse to the link stating gimp.org and click on it. You know how to use the mouse, correct?
4. Find the download and attempt to press the leftmost button on your mouse.
5. If it worked, you should now be downloading it.
6. After the download has finished, become familiar with Gimp.
7. If you need any help using Gimp, repeat steps 1 through 2, only replacing "Gimp" with "Gimp Tutorials". Find a safe looking link and click it. Explore the website and find a tutorial. Put some effort into it and you could make this experiment of yours a winner.
um instead of paint try getting an actual photo and shrinking it in photoshop. at least that would be better than paint....

I must say I agree with this "Sharky" fellow. Even if it wouldn't be your final sprite, you could at least spend a good five minutes by shrinking a weapon's image in paint. Placeholder textures are better than placeholder ****, right?
