Explore a world of creative building, interactive machines, and gears - lots of gears. Build all things mechanical: cars, trucks, cranes, tanks, gearboxes, engines, clocks, anything you can think of. Test your creations to destruction in challenging scenarios, and share them in the workshop!

Description

GearBlocks pre-alpha demo - build 0.4.6095. NOTE: SAVED GAME FORMAT CHANGED, OLD SAVED GAMES WON"T WORK, BUT SAVED CONSTRUCTIONS FROM THE PREVIOUS BUILD (0.4.6034) SHOULD STILL LOAD. New in this build: new "desert proving ground" map (replacing old procedurally generated maps), and numerous rendering improvements. See the release notes for full details on all the changes. To install, unpack .rar file into any folder. See Readme.txt for keyboard / mouse controls and release notes.

Great work, the flat part of the map is very helpful!

Cool, thanks! Yeah, the plan is to add more details to this map eventually, but having a flat area to start on was the first priority!

really nice, i hope you keep working on it!
i played garrysmod quite a lot but when it came to physics and mechanics, it all went horribly wrong. this is the oppsite, never seen such good physics simulation of gears and all that. i hope you will add multiplayer in future so it will be my #1 game that replaces garrysmod.

some stuff i would like to see if its possible.
tire simulation on different grounds and tire pressure.
multiplayer or peer2peer to better share those performance.
ability to mod, like maps, parts, scripts whatever.

thank you for making such a great game!

Awesome, glad you like it, thanks!

Yeah, I could try having different friction levels depending on what surface the tire is currently on. Tire pressure might be a bit of a stretch though, my wheel physics solution isn't that sophisticated. :)

Modding support is definitely something I want to do eventually, I see it as a big part of building a community around this game.

Networked multiplayer is trickier. I do have a working prototype implementation of server authoritative multiplayer. However, there are many unresolved issues to deal with (such as the high network bandwidth required to sync so many moving physics objects), and it generally takes a huge amount of work to make a smooth reliable networked game, so I've put it on the back burner for now. Maybe something I'll revisit in the future!

Sorry about that, yeah, you need winzip or winrar to unpack the .rar file (they're free to download).

Hey dudes, this game is the ****! i have been glued to it for the last 18 hrs trying to perfect a 4x4 transmission system for a monster truck xD.
Given that its in alpha, is there any way i can request a feature?
the ability to have a slider on ur screen mapped to specific motors and servos. so you can lock a servo at like 40% rather than the all or nothing currently. Could use the key maps to nudge sliders, maybe a spring back feature like the servos still have.

Anyways, love the game, my friends and I are having a blast. keep up the good work!

Thanks, glad you're enjoying it!

Yeah, that's a good idea. There could be an option to change the behaviour of the servo so that instead the keys nudge it back and forth around its axis of rotation, and then maybe map another separate key to return it back to centre. I'll add this to my todo list, thanks!

I need help! I started lagging on my computer so I went to Graphics> Resolution and I accidently clicked on the lowest resolution. Now I can't see anything since all the options are mashed up and they don't work. I really want to try this game out but I can't. Please help!

Yeah sometimes if you set the screen res too small, you can't see the UI to put it back, this'll be solved in the next demo build! In the meantime, the only way to fix it is this: You'll have to run regedit.exe (type into your windows search bar to find it), open up "HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/Samuel Nunn/GearBlocks Demo", then find and delete the "Screenmanager Resolution" height and width entries. Then rerun the game and it should revert back to the default resolution.

This has the potential to be phenomenal, Im loving what im seeing so far but im really stumped on a few things due to I cant make a universal joint that is compact Id love to see a Universal Joint implemented. And possibly more spring lengths, maybe even more gear sizes :). At this point id just like to see an update but my god is this game great so far and like I said I love the potential this game has. Keep up the great work ♥♥♥

Pros
-Immense Amount of Possibilities
-Great Fun
-Honestly so many it would be a pain in the *** to name them all
Cons
-Somewhat glitchy (Given this is not a complete game)
-If you happen to forget to save and your car flips over and god forbid you tap the wheel ever so slightly you will go flying across the map and well you are ******
-Not much more than than just minor bugs here and there
Overall 7/10

Thank you, glad you're enjoying the game, that's great to hear!

I'm currently working on the full version of the game, universal joints are done, and I've added a larger spring, more gear sizes, as well as loads of other parts.

I am planning on releasing a demo update soon, but I won't be adding any more parts to it though, sorry!

Yeah, the glitch that sometimes flings you across the map is very annoying, I gotta try and figure out what's going on there. But, if you do lose a construction somewhere on the map, you can at least always get it back by selecting it from within the world menu.
