Fallout is one of the greatest RPG games out there. It's set in the post-nuclear, dangerous world of violence and radiation. The game consists of a very detailed and interesting storyline, tactical turn-based combat, and revolutionary character creation style. You can play Fallout for months, but still it's not boring because of many ways of finishing the game. You can be a bad-ass gangster, or a world-saving hero. It's the year 2161, 84 years after a two-hour-long war that destroyed most of civilization. Mankind soldiers on, living out a hardscrabble life on the surface or holing up in great Vaults built inside caves. You're a member of Vault 13 somewhere in Southern California, and the Vault Overseer's got a job for you: find a replacement water purification chip within 150 days, or your home is doomed.
Your tribe has survived over ten years of drought but now their reserves are at an end. The village elders have selected you to wear the sacred Vault-suit of your grandsire and travel the perilous Wastes in search of the holy GECK — a mythical piece of pre-collapse technology that can restore the land to bounty.
With nuclear apocalypse looming over the world, several vaults were constructed to contain the best and brightest of humanity. By being shielded from the imminent death, the offspring of these people could reclaim and repopulate the Earth. However, before the entire network could be completed, nuclear war broke out. One of the vaults became militaristic and technology-driven. Using their superior weapons, they were able to claim the surrounding wasteland. The members of this vault formed the Brotherhood of Steel, an organization dedicated to unlocking new and better technologies.

Wait, wait, wait... Fallout for linux, too? AAAAAAAAAmaaaaaaaziiiiing!!!
Not quite, it's the DOS version running in DOSBox. I was a bit disappointed by this fact, maybe Ryan C. Gordon could be convinced to do something about this?
I'm perfectly happy with this being a Dosbox version, since it's exactly what Dosbox is good for IMO.
I doubt anyone has the source code anymore, even if they do Ryan Gordan is working for Humble Indie Bundle these days. I doubt he would want to port this old DOS game for free, especially when it runs fine in DOSBox and it let's you scale up the resolution.
I do also prefer to see him working on newer titles, so I guess most of us can live with this. The summary above should be more verbose though.
I bought Fallout1,2,Tactics in one pack from game stop, i'd rather get this off Steam...
However, you cannot play the game unless steam is on, with Desura, you get a digital copy that you can play forever, even if Steam ever somehow shuts down. (I think)
That is correct. The version on Desura does not have any DRM so it doesn't matter if something happen, unlike the Steam versions.
