Cry of Fear is a singleplayer modification of Half-Life 1 which brings you the horror you've always been afraid of. It's a total conversion of Half-Life 1, which means it uses NO Half-Life 1 content or other peoples' files. It's all made exclusively by the developers. It also uses new gaming styles that you will rarely find in Half-Life mods, such as advanced cutscenes and other stuff that will be revealed at a later date.
Cry of Fear is a mod that has a lot going for it, there was a lot of effort put into the game considering it's free, the textures and gun models are very detailed and realistic, the game has lots of strong atmospheric moments and the first half if mostly enjoyable.
But don't believe the hype, this game has lots of problems. First while environments look great, the character and monster models look laughably outdated. While the sound design is mostly well done, the voice acting is just terrible and the story is angsty and juvenile. I wouldn't mind these flaws if the gameplay was good, but it has lots of problems.
First, the gameplay is often just very tedious, the worst offender is the worst offender is the overlong chapter 2 where you need to find fuses and which contains huge amount of backtracking. The inventory which is extremely strict even for survival horror standards doesn't help either, especially in the later parts when you can only carry six items.
Overall Cry of Fear is a game which can't decide if it wants to be action or horror and it doesn't really succeed at being either.

The best horror mod I've ever had the pleasure of playing. I spoke with Andreas in a notable interview a few months back and ever since have held an enormous respect for the man and what it is he sees in his projects, in his "horror", and in himself. Cry of Fear has finally launched and with it comes a turning point in open source gaming, modding, creative expression and a revitalization of the almost dead psychological modern horror that we have come to see in Jacob's Ladder, Silent Hill, Afraid…
