50 EA games soon to lose support for multiplayer online.

EA have not found any alternative to the dying Gamespy service and a large number of games thus lose multiplayer support.
Gamespy has long been a household name for gamers, as numerous games, both PC and console, had multiplayer modes built on servers.
2014 marks the notoriously late for Gamespy, which also means that hundreds of games are in danger of losing support for gaming on-line.

Many developers and publishers, including Activision, Rockstar and SEGA has announced that they are working to find alternative solutions for games that use the Gamespy servers. Similar messages came from EA, which over the years have used Gamespy for many titles, but now the company has announced that they choose to flappers support in their Gamespy games.

Technical challenges and not least the fact that most of the games that use Gamespy start pulling on the oars, located behind EA's decision to allow multiplayer support across 50 titles die out. A variety of titles, such as F1 2002, EA Sports 06 to PC or Fifa Soccer 08-10 for the Nintendo DS, has hardly many active players, but the list also contains relatively popular games like Battlefield 2, Crysis 2 and Star Wars Battlefront 2.

PC games constitute a large part of the list, but Nintendo consoles are also strongly represented. Nintendo has not gone back on its decision to allow the many DS and Wii titles that use Gamespy lose multiplayer functionality, and EA games are no exception.

Popular titles loosing online multiplayer 30th of June 2014.

Why not transfer it to Steamworks server system ? Just like Company of Heroes 1 did.

Well, if it were me, i would shut down gamespy too. Simply because it's no longer profitable and the playerbase is not significant enough to cause a lasting damage or enormous butt hurt. Though a decision such as this places doubts on the company's ability to actually support it's product and providing contrasting statements is just plain BS.

I heard of this mess first hand. I have a friend that works at the local EA building in Florida. He actually has a hand in shutting down support. I respect him for telling me and I asked him why they where doing it. He said corporate is saying it cost to much to update Gamespy support so they decided to shut it down.

It sucks for people who still use Gamespy but if you just hold back your Q_Q and think about it, it's a very logical decision by EA. Most of those games are aging. Especially with the huge range of games nowadays, games become old really fast, so the time span in which a game is profitable is rather short. Especially with the vast amount of games they hold, it's getting more and more expensive to keep supporting old titles.

Again, it's too bad for the players but technology moves on and times change. If you're arguing that EA are soulless bastards, then you really need to grow up and face reality. EA is a company. They need to make profits to keep creating high-end games. They have employees who need to be paid so they can make a living. If you were a manager at EA and saw what huge drain the old titles were on your profits, while being used by only a small percentage of your customers, you'd consider a shut-down too.

They've supported a game you play for 10 years without asking for additional fees. Try getting that when you buy a car or a house (free upgrades every year? Free fixes when something broken?). I thought not.

It's like whining that The Hobbit 3 is not going to come out on VHS.

Before you make such a post Hezus maybe you should do some fact checking because you have no idea what you are talking about. Also EA stated that they WOULD keep these games active at first then did a 180 so read some other comments first as well.

This is what I am annoyed about.

As I have stated before if EA said they were pulling support in the first place I would have been sad but not mad..it's that they lied.

Your post is making you look dim-witted.

If I am truly so wrong about this then I'm curious about those facts I haven't apparently checked. Instead of insulting me as "dim-witted", please take the time to actually state the facts you mentioned so I can see for myself if I was wrong or not. That's how you discuss things.

Also, I read what others posted and that 180-turn is a business-decision. I agree, it's not classy towards the players but, as I stated, it's logical. And that's my whole point. All I've read in the other comments are people raging how EA are a bunch of money grabbers and yes, that's what they partly are. EA Games is a business, their core goal is to make money. And they haven't done it "at all costs" as some might think. They've supported all these games for years and years, some even decades and all without ANY additional fees. As I said, name me another business or product which gives you the same.

Again, my conclusion is that you may be sad about the loss of support for your old game but raging and pointing fingers at EA is completely out of line. Their decision is sad and harsh but it makes sense. That's my point.

"Again, my conclusion is that you may be sad about the loss of support for your old game but raging and pointing fingers at EA is completely out of line."

Am I raging that Gamespy closed down ? No.

Am I saying it's EA's Fault Gamespy closed down? No.

Am I raging? No.

What I'm complaining about is EA pulled another dishonest and not so classy move.

Read my comment.

Don't put words into me or anybody else's mouth.

As far as the "Facts" it would not take much to get an in house server. Especially for a company like EA..and if the player base is small it would cost NEXT TO NOTHING for them to maintain it.

They have all the code, they have the rights to their games, they could easily do such a thing because if not then how could they make so many small games using Pop Cap or even the Battlefield Heroes games for PC and Battlefield 1943 game for PSN? Both which always had a tiny player base.

BTW you insulted people earlier so don't be a Hypocrite.

What the real ****? There's tons of custom Renegade servers. Gamespy literally hosts like, 3 Renegade servers...Out of like, 50? (Only counting the most active ones)

Not to mention there's C&C Reborn, A Path Beyond, RenegadeX, my god...Why are you still playing Renegade?

Lot's of people angry here, but not at the right people.

EA is not the ones shutting down Gamespy, the people who own the Gamespy master servers are: Glu Mobile.

I still think EA, Activision, Ubisoft and the like who are leaving tons of great games in the dust should at least save the most popular ones or help fund community efforts to recreate these services as EA did back in 2003 for C&C: Tiberian Sun and C&C: Red Alert 2 when Westwood Online was shut down. Older C&C games are supported by CnCNet (RA1 and C&C1) currently...not supported by EA...

Yep. A lot of Command & Conquer and Star Wars games used GameSpy. Unfortunately, GameSpy shut down. I don't know about the other online multiplayer services, but it's sad that they shut down. How else are we supposed to play these games online? Some of us can't host LAN parties with our friends. I guess EA just doesn't understand that some people enjoy playing these older games. Maybe they can't really comprehend that perhaps we don't want to always play their new games. IDK
