Prepare to unleash the absolute latest in modern weapons technology against the world's most powerful Generals in Command & Conquer Generals: Zero Hour. In the next era of military strategy and might, you'll need to command a more technologically advanced arsenal to defeat new, more powerful enemies.
Simply put, this game is my childhood. I have spent hours, maybe even days, replaying this game again and again. And when I learnt that mods can be added... I probably spent a month or two playing this game.
It's good mod however need to be cleaned up for a few bug fixes, adding challenge mode and improving the AI (Especially the Russian forces AI which usually stuck like a sitting duck). Improvement should be made to further enhance the unit camo, power and even the model texture itself. Amazing job but couldn't match to that C&C:Shockwave which released by the modders team earlier. Downloaded the mod, installed it and play. The most regretful thing I ever do on Sunday morning since I couldn't track the time and lost 12 hours of daylight. Thumbs up.
no naval forces
[Talk about one late-*** review, but hey!]
Storyline - 7/10:
Not the best conclusion to the vanilla game. Cliched in several aspects but hey, at least it's a decent effort that doesn't involve green crystals, psychic powers or time machines.
Gameplay - 9/10:
Arguably the most solid out of all the C&C games. Most C&C games often degenerate into spam-fests, but this doesn't really apply to ZH. Spam and you'll feel the pain; assuming your opponent isn't a complete dummy.
The addition of 9 sub-faction generals might seem to create a balancing issue (and as a matter of fact, it does if unpatched) but patches, in particular 1.06 can change this drastically, forcing players to be innovative with and against different generals. You won't find the balance of StarCraft: Brood War in ZH, but it's still pretty solid overall.
Visuals - 8/10:
ZH didn't really bring many graphical enhancements to Generals (it's an expansion pack after all). It's not too impressive when you compare it to WarCraft III, its competitor at the time. There are small graphical issues and strange effects at times, but a FPS adjuster for multiplayer games is nice. The musical tracks are composed nicely and fit well into their respective factions, so that's a plus at least. Although some sound effects do sound like they were recorded with a tape recorder, the voiceovers for many of the units are of absolute quality.
Moddability - 9/10:
Just like its 2D predecessors, ZH is a treasure trove for modders since almost everything in the game can be so easily modified with just a text editor; you won't need a fancy SDK to add a new faction or unit in-game. To make matters even better, there's a lot of unused prototype and alpha content that came along with ZH that wasn't previously accessible in the vanilla game. So really, it's no suprise as to why mods are still being made for ZH to this day, despite being almost a decade old.
Hardcoded limits do dampen the modding scene abit though
C&C Generals::Zero Hour
A lot can be said about the expansions to Generals.
For now I'll keep it short, just check my score
Epic game with great levels. it was a blast playing it in those days :)
has decent graphics that are perfect for low end computers, is map friendly, and with a little elbow grease mod friendly. has a compelling campaign and story line , although EA probably could have done better with the opening videos to missions. all round a game with the ability to be marked in gaming history.
Good game with a large variety of mods for a wider variety of gameplay. Good storyline and skirmish with good AI.
A very good game for its age. I used to play this like hell. One of the best C&C game.
