Trapped in an apartment building with ancient evil, surrounded by distressing and eerie atmosphere, player takes the role of Jack Sullivan. Haunted by his past, he must now deal with possessed residents, fight his way through terrifying events, and face this ancient evil and witchcraft.

  The lead character and protagonist, Jack, has to face his past memories as thestory of horror unfolds. Jack has lost his daughter in a fire, his wife has divorced him, and now an old archaeologist tampering with the occult has awakened an ancient evil.

• Hand-to-hand and firearms combat
  

  The player has access to basic hand-held weapons such as a baseball bat, a metal pipe, and an axe. Should the player happen to come by a firearm, there are no guarantees of finding ammunition.

Story

The protagonist, Jack Sullivan, is literally awakened into a world of hurt and horror. The story of the BLACK STAIRS begins in modern day Bangor, Maine. The story combines re-imagined actual events in history of this particular area, as well as mythology from the dawn of human civilization.

The player must embark on Jack’s arduous journey to discover why he is unwillingly trapped in this nightmare, and to face the consequences of his own choices, both in past and in present, as well as the choices of the forces that have dragged him to this bleak existence. The player will experience the story starting from the apartment building, and then diving into the long-forgotten realms of the subterranean Maine, and its the ritual places and burial chambers, finally leading to gates of the great unknown.

This multi-leveled and complex storyline of internal and external conflict will lead the player to different ending scenarios depending on the decisions made during gameplay.

Main characters

Jack Sullivan

Jack Sullivan, a 33-year old construction worker, is the male protagonist and player character of BLACK STAIRS.

Jack is recently divorced, and he moved into an old apartment building in Bangor, Maine, which is where our story begins. Jack lost his daughter, Susan, in a fire that destroyed the family's house. The aftermath of the accident ultimately tore Jack's marriage apart. Jack's wife blamed him for the fire, and Jack not being able to save their daughter from the flames. She was not entirely wrong. Jack blames himself.

Andrew Williams

Andrew Williams is an archaeologist whose earlier work, and the inability to accept the death of his wife, Mirabelle, set into motion the events of Black Stairs.

Andrew and Mirabelle Williams, originally hailing from the old world, settled to Berlin, Maine, after the World War II. In 1993, Andrew surprised his wife by purchasing an apartment in downtown Bangor, Maine.

Andrew began spending more and more time in the Bangor apartment after he retired from his teaching position at White Hill Community College. While Andrew might be the instigator of the events of the BLACK STAIRS, the actual source is an ancient darkness not seen in the world for thousands of years.
