We have done programming camera for old-school rpg top-down view. There are screenshots below as demonstration.
You should for sure let people customize how far zoomed in you are to the player.
Edit: After looking at the other screenshots before and after this one, it appears you can do that, but if not i'll still leave the suggestion here.
