Not as you think, I have hit a similar weapon to this into a melon and it did not smash into a million pieces as Movies portray, it just pierced and got stuck, very gory though, say the actual size of metal that makes contact is about 2-3cm meaning the force would be applied to a small area so no explosive shots I am afraid, but you could leave it stuck in there :D

Warhammers tend to more focused on Blunt damage because most have a hammerhead and a pick they are slow for a onehanded weapon because it is unbalanced but can pierce helmets, mail etc..

In this example the user prefers to pierce armour rather than cause blunt trauma.

These would be quite easy to use because of it's simplicity, it's weakness is it's speed meaning you would be outpaced by a sword for example.
