Un-Ruining the MMO (by MrBtongue)

A good friend of mine Dante sent me a message on Skype today, with a link to a video by a chap called MrBtongue. He makes some very good points about the issues with MMO these days and WoW clones. Dont get me wrong WoW is a good game, just the same as CoD is. What they do, they do very well, and their is clearly a need for them in the market. But that doesn’t mean every MMO or FPS should clone their core mechanics, swap out the models and textures and call it a new game. The video starts of with a sports analogy, i know not my cup of tea either. But it only lasts 2.45 minutes and its serves a purpose so stick with it.

This guys makes some solid point about MMOs and some games released these days. The only way things like this are going to change is if people like us start developing them.

I am not saying we should all start developing a full blown MMO that could complete with Blizzard. But we can quite easily concept our ideas, get simple alphas running and release them to the community for their feedback.

We are still in need of some extra people to join the team. The most urgent of which is an animator.

We have created a new post recently with more up to date information on the project and what we have created so far:

Great vid. Thanks for sharing.

For me, the issue was often setting and gameplay. I don't care about fantasy or loot grinds. Although to be fair, I also have a problem with people so maybe a MMO has little no appeal to me on any level.

That said, this video can be applied the RPGs generally, or indeed, any popular genre.

I 100% agree with his definition of EVE Online.. A themepark surrounded by a Sandbox null sec circle jerk.

The reason eve developed into such a epic map, is its a resource collecting game, so people want to keep their income and their ore, so they team up then, work to concur the other sectors to increase profit... etc.

Its in human nature from the beginning of time, that what some one else has, some one else will want, so i think this is the key.

You need to find a game that uses basic principles of human nature and problem solving and let your brain create your world. eve, minecraft, garrys mod.

Think back to when you were young lego, mechano, sound familiar to the games listed?
These games simply provide the parts for you to make something amazing.

So yes i agree with the video, and his humour isnt bad also :D
