this has got to stop. I don't believe the audacity of EA to stoop as low as this to whorde profits and monopolize the industry. In order for me to... fully commit to my beliefs as I have done in the past... I hereby refrain from visiting the Moddb, as long as EA is considered a sponsor of the Golden Spanner Awards. I'm very, very, sorry to have to make this decision, but I can no longer put up with this horrendous company that is monopolizing the Industry. After acquiring both the ESPN and NFL exclusive licenses, buying 26% of ubisoft in a hostile takeover, and not paying some of their workers overtime, EA has seriously hindered the gaming industry and the consumers, and has accomplished the following: The competitions ability to sell a different, and perhaps better, football game to the masses; monopolizing the industry by acquiring developers and publishers that compete with their own interests, and proving the lengths they are willing to go to make more money, by giving nothing to those that deserve it. I am outraged at the greed of what was once a reputable and respectable company. Their extensive malice in buying exclusive licenses and developers is appaling and monopolizing. The United States has frowned upon monopolization and trusts, and this is exactly what is happening to Electronic Arts. Therefore, in the best interests of myself and the gaming industry as a whole, I am boycotting all EA products and affiliates. If any of the people who won the golden spanner awards would be willing to use the opportunity to show EA how they feel about their blatant disregard for their fans and colleagues who work endlessy to provide us, the gamers, the best quality entertainment, I urge them to do so. Show EA your own dissapointment in their business model, and prove how far you are willing to go to prevent them from further monopolization. I have to say the past two years here have been filled with great memories, and I hope I will be able to return soon. Scottie, congratulations on a fantastic site, and I hope the best for you in future endeavors. I hope you understand where I am coming from, and I hold no disrespect for you or your decisions regarding this site. I hope more of you will join me in boycotting EA, and within a couple of days I will provide a link to a petition which states the same as here.. To Everyone here at the moddb. the best of luck in life, and I wish you all the best. |

As long as they make good games, I don't care. Gaming industry is a great business, games are a product and they are the things that I actually care about, not the situation on the market. In a few years, we'll probably have 2-3 big companies which unite smaller developers, look what happened to music industry. |

he's refusing to come to moddb.com because of ea sponsoring the awards. that's not something ea cares about, its something moddb.com should care about. i don't think it'd be a bad move to do this... don' mock him guys... |

I also hate EA, mostly because of their monopolizing of the computergame market. I don't go as far as to boycott moddb though -- If you run you'll only die tired! |

Electronic Arts seems to have no respect for the gaming industry, for healthy competition, or treating their employees properly. Now that they own the NFL license and the ESPN license, they have eaten up all of their competition. Now they have no drive to take greater improvement leaps each year because, let's face it, if you want to play football you have to buy their title. They don't make poor sports games, but last year was the first time that ESPN sold more than Madden. What does EA do? Do they go back to the drawing board and make Madden '06 kick ass so they can beat ESPN fair and square? No. They buy them out. That's a pussy move. Not only that, but now where's their motivation to make the games cheaper? This year they dropped them to $40 because ESPN sold their titles at $20. Well, ESPN is gone, so EA will still charge the same old prices. I think it's ridiculous, really, that they would rather eat up everyone who challenges them than be pushed to better their products. |

\ Exactly, as alwas 40 puts everything into perspective. Well, I can tell you this, HJ Backwards will never sell out to EA, no matter what the cost. |

I never play ea games anyways, so no real loss on my part. And at least Moddb isn't sponsored by SOE. |

That's the testimonial (it's a long story) of the spouse of an EA employee, and the mistreatment their workers endure. It's a good read, and pretty eye opening. |

Have to disagree a bit. Microsoft got where they are by making good products people buy. They didn't buy out tons and tons of companies. MS just made stuff, people bought it. EA bought the people. |
||
Jan 19 2005 Anchor | ||
Microsoft made Windows, and they've used Windows to create monopolies on other smaller related industries and force their products down people's throats. |
||

Not nessicarily though. There are indeed alternative operating systems, some of which are very good and compatable and easily chosen over windows by some. What im sayin though is MS didn't buy a bunch of companies and take over. Thats basically what EA did, bought out any competition. From what i've seen, MS simply beat them. Edited by: dEaThMaStEr |

Yes, there are alternatives, but they are not as easily accessible. They weren't for a long time anyway, only in the last couple of years have products like Linux and Mozilla made any head room. It isn't that Microsoft makes poor products. They work well, and that is how they've maintained their grip. Microsoft also has the most troublesome software on the planet, and they've repeatedly shown their priorities do not lie in being speedy and secure, but in total domination of the market. Internet Explorer has more bugs than an ant mound, and they have been brought to the public's attention numerous times to no avail. I use Windows and I know that Microsoft still gets the job done. I just disagree with their ethical position on how business should be run. |

Oh yes, i won't deny they have their problems. But i beleive they've done much more good then bad and shouldn't really be compared to EA. Microsoft more of fought for their spot through competition while EA bought everyone out and like the article you posted shows, practically uses their employees for slave labor. EA is going to end up seriously hurting the gaming industry i think as they will continue to buy everyone out and take control. |
||
Jan 19 2005 Anchor | ||
It's a shame that they are able to walk all over everyone like that. And people still support them. |
||
|
Jan 19 2005 Anchor | |
Yes.. If this keeps up i seriously beleive the gaming industry will start to fall straight to hell as EA will have control over almost all the games being released. Lets just hope they stop here for a while. But that is rather unlikly. |
||
Jan 19 2005 Anchor | ||
You don't see Microsoft buying out Apple or Linux, 40oz, so you can't really compare them with EA. I'm going to be laughing when EA crashes down, and hard, and all of those companies they absorbed return to their normal state. Just watch. There won't be any more third parties left in the gaming industry except for EA -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |
