Trouble making Half Life mods work Thread

Hi all! I have recently discovered modding for Half Life, yay! I really want to play some of these mods, i followed a steam install which basically says, have a file for the mod in HL directory restart steam and boom, should be in library. However, it is not the most recent thing said is to use beta half-life, however this does not work. Could someone please hep?
