What do you think of Nintendo's new console, the Wii U?

If you haven't heard of it, it was announced at E3 a few days ago. It will be the HD successor to the Wii. I don't know what to think of it. I'm not too thrilled about the new controller, honestly.

I see some potential in having a second screen like that, especially one with touch capabilities that can also be used in conjunction with a regular screen. But for me, it will boil down to how much each controller is going to cost (it can be pricey enough getting more than 2 normal controllers for modern consoles), and how comfortable they are to hold.

You mean the console or the controller? I might get the console sometime, because it said that wii games and controllers would still work with it. I have a wii, four remotes, two nunchuks and several games for it. If all that really will work with this console, I might get one in the future, depending on how much they charge for it.

Looking how bland and generic PS3 and Xbox games are becoming (Their E3 presentations were terrible) I might consider getting it in a not so far future.

But thinking things through I just might stick with PC.
It's much cheaper and Nintendo has a terrible habit of recycling their games to no end.

You can't buy the controller seperately, and you can only use one controller with the console at a time.

That was the big failing point for me. The discrete screens made sense to me only in a multiplayer environment where you want to hide information from other players.

Exactly how the fuck would you bowl with that controller?

Oh, that's a bummer.

I haven't heard that before... I just lost a lot of faith for Nintendo. I think this may be their first console to fail. What the hell were they thinking?!?

I think it's because the console doesn't have enough bandwidth to stream graphics to more than one controller at a time. IMHO, there's no need to do that though, just use a lower fidelity image.

Or consider the controller an own PC just with lower processing power and making the connection just a network link type communication. Then the problem would not exist. But I guess then it would be also more expensive.

Nintendo aims to be family friendly, but how the hell can you have a family play together without a second controller?

I don't want to pay the price for an iPod touch for a new controller...

It can already do that, I think they must have some architectural problem somewhere that stops this working.

I guess they're still leaning towards the Wii remotes for that.

As far as I heard you can use the same controllers you can attach to the Wii.

I sure hope so, otherwise I'm not going to even consider getting it. Multiplayer is the main reason I got a Wii, so I can play it with my little sister.

Hm... just read. They made a new storage medium (kind of dvd) for the Wii-U which (as they claim) can hold up to 25G of data. That's quite a lot. Besides this a Radeon-HD based graphic chip. Are we aiming now more for the hardcore gamers out there?

They seemed to be with the third party reel, the presenters tossed a few names around during the E3 conference including Assassins Creed, Arkham City, and Battlefield 3.

These kinds of capacities are fast becoming standard. In case you missed it, the recent firmware update on the 360 made changes to the way the laser reads disks, to allow them to handle proprietary higher capacity disks.

The WiiU is also coming out 6 years later than the 360/Ps3, and not at a time when memory cost a real premium. It's inevitable that their hardware will be superior in that respect, and also somewhat in terms of processing muscle. It'll also not suffer too much on the cost front either. To put things in perspective, 1Gb DDR3 at 800Mhz would cost you over $100 in 2005. Now you can buy around 6-8Gb DDR3 at 1600Mhz for less.

If more blockbuster series are going to be moving to the Wii U, and the graphics surpass those on the PS3 and XBOX360, it could sell it for me. I kinda like the idea of playing a single-player game like Arkham City and Assassins Creed on it, with intuitive touch controls. I can see myself putting in a code into one of Batman's gadgets on the touch pad.

...it's name still reminds me of an insult phrase

Unless they prove it is actually better than using my Sixaxis (I have to say, the use of motion control in inFAMOUS, Killzone 3, and Uncharted is impressing me a great deal more than how they used Wiimotes in Super Mario Galaxy), I'm not buying.

They improved motion control a while back with the motion plus upgrade, although for obvious reasons, hardly anyone adopted it.

My guess is because if the motion controls are too tied into the gameplay, it would make the game dependent on the owner having the peripheral. That could be a bigger risk when the overall target is the casual market.

"to know over skittles"?

I believe the word you're looking for is "knock".
