The Wild Waves The waves struck the shoreline violently, throwing spume high into the air. Gradually the sea awoke… “Why do I pound the shore like this?” it wondered. The sea calmed but gradually the waves resumed their pounding. ‘It just seems… right…” it thought. It tried to sense its surroundings, but as it opened its senses it quickly became overwhelmed by the sheer massive numbers of living things within it, not to mention the various currents and so forth. In an effort to preserve its sanity it tried desperately to shut down its senses but it couldn’t remain that way for long. In a secondary attempt it condensed itself into a much smaller portion of its former body. As it did so the water which composed it gradually coalesced into a physical form much like a cross between the humans who sometimes swam in its shores and the fish swimming within its depths. The body was feminine, human from the waist up, but possessed a fish-like tail and all the speed of the latter, while remaining totally translucent. Though it didn’t know it yet, it almost looked like a glass mermaid. Examining the new body she wondered; “Just what am I?” but ultimately shoved the question aside for later and set out to explore its surroundings with its new senses. Years passed, but eventually she met a strange creature, in shape almost identical to it, but composed of flesh and blood like the humans and the fish. “What are you?” she asked the creature. The creature responded; “I’m a Mermaid! What are you? You look like us, but transparent…” She replied; I don’t know what I am. I was the sea but then became this.” You were the Sea? That’s impossible!” the mermaid replied. “No it isn’t! I woke one day and found myself overwhelmed by my senses. I finally made myself smaller so as to not take in as much at a time.” she replied. The mermaid thought for a moment; “If you were the sea, but self aware. Hmm… Then that means you would be an Undine!” “An Undine? What is an Undine?” she asked. “An Undine is a Water Elemental. Basically a living body of water, much as you claim to be!” Happy to finally have a name for what she was, the Undine replied; “Thank you for the name! I was unhappy not having one, but you are the first creature I have spoken to that didn’t swim away in terror at the sight of me!” As they were talking, a boat came by. It hit the Undine on the back of the head. As she was sent rolling forward, the sea around them rolled as well and swamped the boat, washing a teenager over the side. The mermaid’s expression became fearful as she was swept away by the rolling waves. The Undine continued watching until the mermaid was swept out of sight, then turned angrily towards the teenager who drove away the first person she had ever gotten to talk to. |
