Means it's for n00bs

--------------------------------------------------

I recommend the following:
Red Hat 8.0 if you want to be professional. Needs you to learn Linux, and well.
Mandrake 9.0 if you just want to mess around. Works like Windows.

--------------------------------------------------

I run the Red Hat 8.0 Pro distro as a LAN web/HL server and it works very well.

Make sure you can d/load all the ISO images and burn them onto CD properly as well.

Well, Linux is definately a superior OS to Windows, but what would you use it for if your not a programmer? You can bet your money next to none of your games or software will work with Linux. The only thing it's good for is for server purposes or for desk work (typing letters, making presentations etc.). So Mandrake is definately good for starters, but i'd go with Winlinux or Lindows. It has a better chance of running your old software, whilst still providing you with the stability, speed and the open-source code.

im just trying to see if i can get anything to work, which doesnt seem to be going so well... i somehow managed to make my resolution at 1280x1024, but the monitor is set a 75x75 dpi, so i have to scroll around my desktop (which is REALLY annoying) and i cant seem to get though my router and out to the net off of it yet... i can access the router, and i can mess with proxies until i get the SAS proxy denied thingie, which usually means that the modem hasnt been authed yet, but it has (hence me writing this on a dif comp)

im running with the KDE gui, as its the one that came with it, but i have no idea how to change any of the display settings (i can view them, but not change them :() nor have i any idea on how to make the proxy setting work, as my router does not seem to be able to see the comp, even if i can run a route outside... very frustrating

if anyone has any ideas or suggestions on how to fix this, please help!

oh yeah, and creative doesnt have support out for my sound card (SB Live 5.1) so i dont have any sound either... so if anyone knows where i could find some drivers, that would also be helpful... i think this must be the single longest post ive ever written :o

bump...

UPDATE:
i got the net connection workin, but i have yet to figure out how to make the video setting bow to my every whim (i.e. i still have to scroll around my incredibly larger ****, erm desktop, i mean. i tried to update the drivers, but found myself unable to get the dependencies check to make them work (and they would just generally fail anyways, so...)
