modDB Dictionary Thread

A good mate of mine, bluewolf72 came up with a rather nifty idea for a feature and that is the modDB dictionary. It shall explain any terms associated with modding and gaming in general..

for example

Modification - 'mod·i·fi·ca·tion' - In gaming this is the act of taking a game and altering and or adding new features to it, so that it differs from the original project

Total Conversion - 'to·tal con·ver·sion' - Altering every aspect of an original game to such an extent it can no longer be reckognised. This involves new models, sounds, maps, textures everything!

1337 - 'e·leet' - A term giving to those superior gamers. See n00b for more e·leet speak.

n00b - 'noob·e' - A gamer who is either new to the scene or just fairly hopeless.

etc... etc... please write down as many mod related words as you can think of!!

spam - spam - posting completely useless things (see:azz0r)

once INtense is free this will be a feature.

like submitting a interivew or a article the modDB.com Dict will exist. You enter the word and the meaning and the page will have the abc-xyz and you pic the letter and see whats in there.

If you have an idea share it.... this wont last long in a forum thread.. you spammers will kill this idea!

perhaps definitions on coding, mapping, animating, modeling, things like that?

This isn't a modding how-to site, this is a mod database, i.e. collection of mods (put that in the dictionary too)

if its a database of modding, then it should have a bare amount of info on how to mod, or where to find info on how to mod

No, it's a database, not an encyclopedia or 'Everything You Need to Know about Modding'. It's a sorted collection of mods, that's it.

Now, so this isn't spam, let's get back on topic. (in other words, I'm not posting here anymore, and you shouldn't either)

perhaps there should be a brief description of the individual games on this site? maybe a biography of noteworthy ppls?

Hey, yeah, good idea! Excellent, in fact! Except, maybe you shouldn't include people who don't go to the moddb, for example the CS makers.

i was thinking of ppl such as john carmack, american mcgee, peter molyneux (or whatever)... major players in the gamin industry... i dont even know how made cs, so i wouldnt necessarily consider them noteworthy

that we could also do... i was thinking that u need a dictionary for things that ppl would mention, and the other person wouldnt know, so for different terms that ppl are unfamiliar with, there could be a definition in the moddb dictionary, and if someone had a request for something that they dont know to be defined, there could be a request button on the dictionary, and if reasonable, it could be added

AFK -- Abbreviation for Away From Keyboard.
AI -- See artificial intelligence
beta -- A version of an application that is made available prior to the official release for the purposes of testing.
BTW -- Abbreviation for By The Way.
bug -- A problem with computer software or hardware that causes it to malfunction or crash.
C++ -- A computer language based on C that uses objected-oriented programming design principles

flame war -- A series of public posts in which people flame one another rather than contribute useful information
handle -- A nickname used in online communications.
home page -- A web page that is topically the main source of information about a particular person, group, or concept. Many people on the web create home pages about themselves for fun; these are also known as vanity pages.
mods -- Hacker slang for modifcations to hardware or software, especially bug fixes or minor design changes

azz0r doesnt spam, he just, well, erm... i dunno...

so anywho, more things for the dictionary...

perhaps defining certain milestone mods? (e.g. cs=counterstrike dod=day of defeat, etc)
