Ok, to clear a few things up regarding mod awards as I have been recieving quite a few emails regarding it! (note the following is a snippet of an email I recieved with all personal details cropped out)

Anoymous wrote: Just a few things on my mind... maybe you can put them to ease. I was cruising Mod DB yesterday in search of our newly submitted custom logo when I came across the most recent mod award. Anyway, I saw the latest award for the mods on the page, and I was like ahh... what? First off, how do you win these awards? They got an award for doing a pre-render of a model? I went to their page... the whole page is filled with renders. No in game shots, but who am I to criticize. How do we go about getting an award? How about an award for ingenuity?! We are the only mod or game even, TO DATE, that has the feature of saving your teammates. No other game on the planet has that feature, and we have many more features that are unique. If you were to read the interview on our page... you would see how into this we are, and the team is very small. We actually have in game screens on our page... not all renders. When did pretty pictures become the heart and soul of gaming? Anyway, just let me know how you give out these awards, because now I am a little curious.

P.S. We don't need no fancy videos to make up for our mod, we just put the
pen to the pad and let it speak for itself!

ME! wrote: There is actually about 12 different awards that can be won with ingenuity as one of them. (So rest assured if there is a way to award a mod for something it has done which is standout it will not go unrecognised!) As to the actual award distribution scheme awards are given out at random (with the guide of no more than 1 a week so that it remains an elusive recognised honour in the modding world). We aim to award mods from different games too, and not just focus on HL, however when push comes to shove we judge each mod on its merits, look at what it is trying to achieve and most importantly look at what sets it apart from other mods and will give it an award accordingly. Hence that feature you mention will go a long way in getting an award however there is just so many to dish up, around the place all you can do is keep the fingers crossed and if you put in the effort you will receive the honour!

Oh and towards the end you do raise some interesting points regarding how if a mod looks fancy it generally gets more attention than it may deserve.

Unfortuantly that is to true, we humans tend to be very judgemental and base our judgement on what we first see which is naturally the GFX on offer. Just the way it is, however if you create good gameplay the word will spread - regardless!

I think it's really difficult to choose one mod, and say that it's the best mod around. The awards try to choose mods by specific qualities. Probably, it makes things easier, but it's not the easiest thing of the world.

I mean, who gives awards? Is just one person, that has been gifted with a god's bless? I don't know... The best solution would be a democracy (is the spelling correct???). Everyone should have the power of the decision, and than vote for it's favourite mod. But, what would be the problem? Most of us would vote on our mod, because we want an award (Am I wrong???). That's what happens.

We, poor mortals, aren't allowed to judge things. The judgement is the worst thing that we've created. Only the "perfect person", that would never be judged, could have the power of the judgement. And... are you a perfect person? Do you know someone that never did wrong things? Obviously, you don't know. This person is unreal.

So, what we do? I don't know (hehehe). I'm just saying what I think; if we were less stupid and less selfish, we could, at least, vote.

That is how the current award system works, mods are recognised for only 1 quality - i.e. visual greatness, dedication etc..

for the mod of the month system there is a demoncracy!! Because that is a much larger honour, each mod in its profile has the link 'nominate this mod' If you click that, you are voting for that mod. At the end of each month these votes will be tallied and something appropiate picked. (that system will be fully implemented shortly)

"Something appropiate is picked" - That's a weird thing... Don't you think? I don't think it's worth... You "force" something on a nominated mod... strange thing...

The True Combat award smells fixed, as it is a mod released in 2001, not 2002.
