Ok, I have begun recieving complaints from people whose mod was denied a listing at this website. The mission statement of this site is to list all mods, but I do believe at least a mod should have a working webpage if it is to be listed. Anyhow following a complaint I wrote this back to a person (let me just say there complaint was long well written and somewhat justified i suppose).. what do you reckon? Fair or not?

ME wrote: I am sorry you feel this way but let me justify my position first. The mod database gets 10+ mod applications a day. The vast majority of these are completely new mods based on little more than an idea. Most people don’t know what creating a mod involves they just play one and think, cool I’ll do that in 2 weeks and be famous. The fact of the matter is making and more importantly completing a mod takes DEDICATION, RESEARCH and INTELLIGENCE among other things. I am not saying you don’t posses these qualities, quite the opposite, I am certain you do, but just ask any mod leader that has completed a mod or one that has failed. He will say it is easy to fall off the rails and give up. As such it is a well known fact that 99% of modifications fail. It is unfortunate and I wish it were not this way, but it is unfair that 90% of the mods have not updated in the past 4 months, and 80% of these mods don't really show the interest they did when they first started. The fact is such mods DETRACT and draw people away from mod teams which have put in the hard yards and are missing out on the attention and rewards they deserve. It annoys me that there are so many mod leaders that get their mod listed, and then think sweet lets get the site to do something for me, or lets just sit back and relax only to never return to developing there mod… I am sorry that is how it works… I dunno perhaps I am been harsh, perhaps I am been unfair and the mod databases claim ‘to list every mod is false’. But I can assure you, I have assisted and pulled so many favours for so many mod teams over the years only to see them die a week later because the leader deserts the team and thinks he will go off and make a dragonball mod… It is extremely frustrating.. and so I try to police modifications getting added. Is it so hard to ask for a solid mod plan? I like to see ones where the founder really has put in the early hard yards and come up with a convincing new idea and then I will glady authorise it. Too many mods just borrow and modify other mods ideas. THIS WILL NEVER WORK, because if it did the original mod would just make adjustments to play that way and capitalise on the popularity… As such the problem is, that I am in a way playing mod god, but like everything in life someone has to be in control and judgements must be made of which some may very well be wrong as may appear to be in this case… I guess the underlying moral is, good ideas combined with a little determination work.. unfortunately sometimes I don’t see that.

Just updated what I said a little :D Makes more sense now, sorta

Thought: no acceptance of DBZ or Zelda mods unless they show they are clearly different from earlier ones (i.e. more than changing the power point system)

I'm not sure if requiring a website is so correct... I mean, if you do a website first, probably you've done it because it's a huge mod, so you'll leave the other stuff to be done later...

But in case it's not a SO big mod, I guess first you'll code, maybe you'll publish some betas, and then you'll do the website.

Actually, I think the Mod Information is much more important than a working website.

Another thing that makes me angry (other than lack of description) is the stupid news... OMG... Help wanted, 100kb - 800x600 pics... Those people must be jailed 8)

no a website is needed.

no team will join your mod if they cant see what you have to offer. Site shows your serious. plot means you mean your serious even more. concept art makes others feel your taking the mod to the next level. model shots, than map shots, than code updates.

without a site your mod gets lost in the mix and you have no fan base.

i think i have to agree with blue on this one, esp since websites are so easy to make... and if someone is actually making a mod using bought software, the amount of money they spend on the site hosting is negligable to the amount of money that they spend on their software

I just said that in reference to many UT mods I know... Yeah, UT has too many SMALL mods (mutators only), but just one thing:

I can't accept people moding to be famous... I hate this kind of thing, we must do something not to prove that we are good to other people, but just to ourselves, in case it's needed. That's the way I do the things.

I think we can report some *interesting* and pleasant mods inside a game review... like Max Payne Review, so inside the review there would be a list with some mods (released ones only???). I guess it'd be good.

The mod nomination I don't agree at all, because everyone here know 99% of people are here because of HL mods, so they usually just pay attention on its mods...

well i push rtcw and hl mods

someone take ut and ut2k3, devastation mods
someone push sp mods
someone push qk mods, tribes so on so on.

Im gonna be doing a rant friday or saturday about what mods look good. I interview mods that look good.

We need a mod reviewer, map reviewer. but this takes time.

I can take the UT mods only... If I had Ut2003... ;( I can be a Mod reviewer w/o any problem 8) Since I've played 99% of the UT mods listed here
