Don't know if it was added before but it would be great to have the possibility to add a custom preview image to videos.
Atm it's choosen randomly which could take away much from a video e.g. if there is a surprise at the end and the image choosen is from that end scene.

About Comment notification

How about add this feature for groups? I as a admin just get lost in the amount of replies in the tuts, downloads .... I just don't have time or wanting, to check out the all articles, so as a result A LOT of comments just stay unanswered. So it would be good if the all admins of the group will be getting the notifications about comments on the pages and maybe forum, or even all members of group, in this case just add the some link on the group page in order to every member may check out the comments and questions

Yes, comment notifications would be great. If someone replies to you, you get an e-mail, which is cool, but if someone just comments in one of your mod's images, articles, videos etc., you have no way but to check every image etc., you have, which is a bit frustrating. It would be great if there was a 'comment notification' menu, where there would be options like:

-Get notification when someone replies to you.
-Get notification when someone replies to a member that you have replied too.
-Get notification when someone comments your images, videos, articles, etc.
-Get notification when someone comments on something you have commented too.

And so anyone could check whichever option he would like. Also, I am not sure if there is an option like that, but I would like, whenever I update something, to have the option to 'show' or 'not show' the update. I want to update my profile but I will not change something important therefore I don't want everyone to get a notification that I've updated my profile. Again, I don't know for sure if there isn't already such an option.

Forgive me if these suggestions have already been made.

Good luck with everything you are planning to do with moddb :)

Can you possibly add download mirrors for the east coast? It's kind of disappointing when the mod you want to download takes 2 hours at 200KB/sec because you have to download it from California, instead of your download taking 15 minutes at 1.5MB/sec when you're downloading from NY, Washington D.C., or Chicago.

mirrors are a difficult one, we have a lot but they can easily get overloaded and it is expensive to locate them all over the world. Speed should be better now

Here are a few new suggestions:

  • Static Credits for Game/Mod/Engine profiles, so as to allow pages not linked to any member or company page - so for example if someone adds a game made by a single person on that person's behalf, the submitter just writes that author's name and it is displayed in Developed By field, no need to have it linked to that submitter's member page or to have a group page added either.
  • Addons need to support videos and extra images, they are often more complex to be shown in one image. Also combine the downloads page with the addon page.

Here is everything we already have listed:

  • Downloads should be pinnable, versionable (folders of files)
  • Support for embedding unity games into profiles, or give unity games a specific profile for game embedding.
  • Support .swf uploads in the downloads section, or play now option (check the filetype and auto-run it).
  • Live game Stream integration into game profiles. Twitch / youtube / google / hitbox
  • Ability to create custom pages inside profiles Eg members/tkaza/myspecialpage
    - Expanding on profiles to become more of a personal showcase / Launchpad for their most popular content / visited content.
  • More stats for everything, pie charts and traffic flow graphs for all!
  • Media kit repo, where devs can upload and share their logos for press to use.
  • 5 star system where devs, members etc can become supporters, reaching a 5 star rank is through site contribution only and the rewards are perks unavailable to casual users.
  • Platform tabs are pointless, header needs a redesign
  • Polls - how would this work? How would you embed them? This isn't hard to do at all as the code is already there.
  • Development wiki - i'm not sure how to do this and what it would offer? These are very hard to start off and grow
  • Platform tabs - don't worry there not going, they just wont be shown so prominently
  • Not sure how to increase forum activity...
  • Dead profiles are a challenging one, we just try and surface the active and popular ones
  • Community badges would be great (5 years at ModDB etc)
  • @mentions great idea
  • Chat service (not sure who would use this and where we would put it)
  • Tag system / tag cloud for games - would help with the dead profiles
  • Different layout options / more versatility in profiles (the idea I mentioned about custom homepages will address this)
  • WORKING COMMENT SYSTEM (the current one is dated and bugged) - what are the issues with the current?
  • Feedback exchange, submit a game for playtest but playtest something first
  • Greenlight tighter integration
  • Press system to reach press for indie devs
  • Overhaul karma on comments / forums (show post count to encourage participation?)
  • ModDB / IndieDB Forum split might be a way to get more focused discussion
  • Overhauled groups to highlight members positions
  • Comment notification
  • Better search system
  • Overhaul the auth system. Obviously we want to stop spam, but perhaps things should be auto authed by default and if you post bad stuff that permission gets removed? Or vice versa.
  • Be able to coordinate content launch (i.e. set the date it goes live)
  • Quicker group setup since groups are not that critical
  • Backend content system see: Media.moddb.com

hello,

moddb needs a upload calculator, means when you upload a mod or anything, it shows how many percent is done and how much time left until upload is finished.

please add it, this would help all uploaders.
thanks

Mar 18 2015 Anchor

All the suggestions are looking great, I am eager to see them implemented into Moddb!

As for the comment system, one bug that I came across is when I or someone else replies to a comment, the replies cannot be downvoted, only upvoted. It's like there is no room for the minus (-) symbol. I am using Win7 and the latest version of Chrome.

Also, one other suggestion would be the following (though, and sorry if it is, I am not sure if this suggestion is the same as the 'Static Credits for Game/Mod/Engine profiles' idea):

When you are a member of a developing group, it would be nice to choose if you'd like to show which of the mods the group is creating under your profile's 'mods' tab. For example, I am a member of a group but I am helping in only one of the three mods it is creating. So, I do not like to have the other two mods shown under my 'mods' tab.
Or if you are an admin of a developing group, you could select some options under it's members, so you 'tag' them in which field they help. Or the members could do that themselves. So, if someone sees my 'mods' tab, he would see Mod1-Creator, Mod2-Story,Mapper, Mod3-Tester etc.

Once again, good luck with everything you have planned to do with Moddb :D

If you are using Google Chrome; the upload completion level (in %) is the bottom level of the browser screen.

Good news!

INtense! wrote: Just letting you guys know I have greatly streamlined the process of adding:

games, mods, engines and groups

Games can also be autofilled from Steam, Greenlight, iOS and Android. I have also added the VR/AR platforms and still have changes to come to make this process even better. Oh and when adding images to a gallery you can now select multiple images at a time.

In addition VR and AR have been added to the platforms list cross site, so if your developing a game or mod for VR you can now toggle it as a platform.

Is this really a "platform" and not simply an Gadget to attach to a computer/console of some sort? You don't have a platform "GamePad" or "Driving Wheel" too, right?

There is room, you just can't downvote authors of content anymore to avoid the mass downvoting of someone's comment. So mod members can only get +votes now.

Agreed with Dragonlord. There are roughly 23 thousand games in the database yet there is no proper section for 1) system requirements, 2) info about support for accessories (AR/VR, gamepads, joysticks, racing wheels etc.). At least now users can provide some details whether their games are available via VR/AR, but the rest is still missing.

We are going to properly implement gadgets / accessories. This is just a temporary solution until we get there!

Regarding

Someone wrote: Not sure how to increase forum activity...

When it comes to the game-specific forums, I think you should try doing a better job of offloading this to other community providers, such as Reddit, Disqus, Muut and self-hosted forums (Discourse, Vanilla, NodeBB etc.). Your forum will never really be able to compete with any of the aforementioned because you have so much on your plate already and they will keep doing their one thing exceedingly well. And developers will always want different things.

Instead of spreading yourself too thin, you could focus on easier integrations with these mediums, like embeddable discussion widgets, RSS feeds, and most of all a proper API.

A list of all files I've uploaded so far. Just make it work like the comment list. I want to control my comments and all files.

Another matter. Mod-db fell into stagnation and is now standing on the precipice of an abyss to sheer boredom. There's an increasing number of clubs that look like ghost towns. Most members merely check images and snoop around. Inactivity is overwhelming. What are you gonna do about it?

I'm not entirely sure if you want to make this site more entertaining or merely more alluring...
...for some reason.

One more thing. I want to know who up/down-votes my comments. Members would become more polite and cautious this way. So, a list of members that up and down votes me, please(it should be an option displayed near the comment that has been up/down voted).

Thank you for your attention. Try not to ban me.

Sorry if these were suggested before but...
Is it possible to improve the view of images on groups, members, games and mods ?
Like having some sort of an image gallery system that shows galleries according to years images were posted in this actually might be helpful for groups with rather huge amount of images, the user can if he wants show images in separate galleries depending on years for example he can only view the images that were posted in 2010 if he wants or more, or of course he can view everything at once. Also is it possible to allow members to create their own galleries so someone can create image galleries related to gaming and another gallery in case he/she wants to upload stuff unrelated to gaming like arts ? or other stuff ?
Also Creating a hashtag system might be good for quick access to related stuff.

I just had an idea while looking at my list of reviews. It may have been proposed before, I can't see it in the list. It's quite a big thing so I don't know if that would fit in what you want the site to be nor if that would be easy to do with what you have...
A "suggestions" tab for users, which would list games/mods that a user would probably like, based on what his existing ratings are and on how active he is on a game/mod. Example: a user that put 10 on Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 and 9 on Icewind Dale and who keeps on downloading mods for these games would automatically get obvious suggestions for Pillars of Eternity or Planescape Torment, but also more underground yet high rated similar games, or even very different games in appearence but that have the same fans as BG and ID.
It would automatically work by looking at:
- not necessarily, the games/mods genres and themes that the user apparently likes
- what games/mods have the same "fanbase" as the games/mods the user likes
- similarity between users and suggestions picked from highly similar users favorite games
It would be pretty similar to what LastFM does for music, maybe close to Steam's discovery queue, I'm not a big Steam user so my discovery queue is meh. What I know is that it works quite well in LastFM. Their system makes less known bands show up in suggestions, which is much better than suggestions systems based on just the page a user is visiting.
The advantages of ModDB would be the availability of all these users ratings and the big games and mods databases. It would be very different from Steam's discovery queue which is based on the games the user owns, here it would be on what the user rates.
This could be a call for users to rate more, and not just using 9 or 10, so they get better suggestions.

Seeing down voters is bad idea imo. Seeing upvotes is good. And having a better notification system (replys to your comments and such)

A few questions for you:

  • How would a hashtag system work ROGG?
  • A recommendations queue for browsing mods is something we want to do Igor
  • Maggy - what does a good comments notifications system look like? When do you get notifications for example

Well, a mention system would be really nice. It would increase the amount of communication that's taking place at all times. I don't know how to go at that, but something like the infamous Google+'ses +namehere system or @namehere from social sites such as twitter, facebook, instagram (and now deviantart, too) could be used to either mention modpages as a whole, where the developers from said page get a notification or allow user to user mentions, too. I had to get used to it on both dA as Youtube (google+) but eventually, I'm really liking the change.

As for how a notification should look like, I've put my design skills within regular paint to use in the following image (I'm not home, lol).
