Beginning and the end:
In 1726 the fishing village «Shchukino» received the status of a city and the name «Staro-Rybinsk». One of the main suppliers of fish to the Russian Empire and to foreign countries and kingdoms. The city is located on the shores of the White Sea, mostly on a plateau near the Shchukin River.
In 1837 the city was closed and transferred to a closed city for a teaching and research laboratory. In the laboratory, botany, virology and others were studied. Among the scientists were the best scientists from Russia, Germany and prominent figures of the old world. Some of the residents were taken out of the city. Only the families of scientists, workers of the fishing port, were left with a ban on contacts with the outside world.
In the middle of 1920, the city was classified, and at a distance of 50 km from the city, a military test site was located closer to the border of the city, where various tests of new weapons were carried out. A medical and recreation complex for the military command was located near the mud lake. The fishing port was transferred to a closed military transport port, from which they continued to export fish products and pharmaceuticals to the future Union and European countries. After November 29, 1939, there are fierce battles with Finland. The troops of the Red Army and the fleet moved to the borders of Finland. Part of the regiment was left to protect the borders. Some residents rushed to the border to leave the closed borders. 30 November 1939 bloody morning - all refugees were shot on the spot.
On June 25, 1941, the USSR declares war on Finland. On September 5, 1941, more intense fighting took place on the border than in 1939. The city stood between two armies. On the morning of September 6, 1941, the Finnish army entered the city. On September 8, 1942, there was no soul in the city from either side. In the middle of the day, the bombing of the Reich aviation began. At the end of the day, the city was razed to the ground.
On May 1, 1946, secret excavations and disposal of mines and bombs take place on the territory of the city district, special attention is paid to the territory of the former laboratory. The mud lake dried up and became a swamp. The buildings of the health-improving complex were not hit by the bombs.
On July 20, 1946, the construction of a secret laboratory, a prison, a psychiatric hospital, a landfill and a small town «Ustyansk-4» began on the territory of the old town with a partial restoration of the port. Scientists in the fields of biochemistry and chemistry were recruited to the territory with the possibility of family relocation. To guard the borders, a marine regiment was founded with anti-aircraft installations, radio towers and locators.
In 1947, the Cold War began - the restoration work was increased. On March 1, 1947, the first passenger ship entered the port after the complete destruction of the city. A laboratory, port and other important buildings were launched.
On September 1, 1978, the laboratory stopped secret research, the borders were opened. The old name «Staro-Rybinsk» was returned to the city; the city has not been marked on the maps until today.
