[page=modDB @ Free Play 2005 - Thursday, Meet up Day!]
Fork, BigBird and Tarky landed in a cold wet Melbourne this morning. First stop for the ModDB fellas in this strange land, was a pub too quench our thirsts with a few ales.
(A Staff shirt drinking a generous ale poor)
(BigBird with a Free-Play poster)
After waiting around in the driving rain waiting for a taxi, and yelling abuse at taxi stealers, our next stop was a quick detour to McDonalds to grab a quick bite for lunch.
Then off we went in search of the Next Wave Office, the hub of the Free-Play organisation, to find some bandwidth to suck and to get some space to spread out and get into making our video presentation for Free-Play.
(The sign on the door, what a piece of art!)
(Tarky trying to figure out the preview video)
(Fork pretending to help Tarky to figure out the preview video)
(Having a coldie over a laptop... well it was warm, but free!)
(Round Table with corners discussion with the Dystopia boys)
(Teddy on the Left and Fuzzy on the right from Dystopia)
(BigBird and Termi in a deep deep discussion)
Many thanks to Nextwave for accomodating us in our time of need.
[page=modDB @ Free Play 2005 - Friday, Day 1]
Day 2 started early with the modDB video development which soon turned to drama when Laptop batteries starterd to die. Unfortunatly we didn't actualy get the video ready for our presentation due to the fact that Tarky screwed up by rendering the wrong video.
Anyway we went ahead with our presentation with the Dystopia boys which went pretty damn smooth even without the video and with the biggest croud of the day! Here are a few pics from Day 2 @ Free Play! Videos soon to follow!
(Good old Melbourne Trams)
(Teddy setting up for presentation)
(Some of thbe croud we pulled in)
(Fuzzy talking to the people about dystopia while Teddy plays)
(More Fuzzy Talk... god he can talk alot)
(2 of the Many Free Play chicks)
(Teddy talking to a Dystopia fan)
(Small talk near the mens room)
(This was a bit of a meet and greet session of the days speaker at Free Play. Good opportunity to network)
(Quenching a hard earned thirst with a big cold Vic, Victoria Bitter)
(Teddy talking with Peter Jarrett from Gridwerx)
So that is basically day 2 for now. Stay tuned for videos and more images coming tomorrow! Now if you dont mind, me and BigBird are off for more beers!

[page=modDB @ Free Play 2005 - Saturday, Day 2]
Today is LAN day. Basically what this means is people play mods and games on PC's. I was actually contacted by the organisers a few weeks ago for a list of mods that should be played on the LAN so I gave them a good list, but all I can say is .. once people got stuck into Dystopia, there was no turning back. What was supposed to be an hour 'go' with Dys turned into a 6 hour frag fest with just Dystopia playing.
As usual we got a few images of the event so enjoy them!
(People playing Dystopia)
(...and more. Even I'm playing)
(Saturday Night drinks with a few randoms and DX from Gamestah Radio)
Basically I know there aren't many images but we have a crapload of video which will be cut together and posted up for everyone aswell! Please do enjoy images we post tho! :D
[page=modDB @ Free Play 2005 - Sunday, The Final Day]
Basically today was about people just showing off their stuff. Be it game company's, indy devs, High profile people or even University's! Once again, not a huge ammount of pics due to us being flat out, but there are enough for now till the video comes!
(This was our little setup. It actually looked rather cool!)
(Birdy signing a Poster for the Dystopia guys)
Ok so thats it for the images for now. I have about 100 more but well, to be honest I'm tired and I've got alot to do with some videos! So, stay tuned for the videos of the event including an interview with the Dystopia boys.
ALCOHOL FOR THE WIN!!!
I'd be too drunk to figure out what was going on.
Can't wait to see some awesome pics of the event.
Those modDB shirts are sexeh.. but not as sexeh as you Birdy ;)
Wish I could've come. Nothing I want to do more atm...

There is no age limit!

for example, some of the tiems have about an 80%-150% Mark up
most things about are about 35%-50% markup.
ok, sorry 2 say, but for a gmaing expo, there aint much gaming news coming from it, when are u gonna post stuff about the interviews use have been having and shots of the mods and all that ****, all we are seeing are booze pics (of gross Vic)
wtf the guy in the back looks evil
Watch out. That guy is going to blow up the place...

I wish I lived in Aussie-land. There's no real expo like that here. E3 is nice and all, but you have to be in the media or in the industry in order to attend, unless I'm mistaken and that's what's restricted with Free-Play as well. Makes me jealous of the Tokyo Game Show. :P
OMGZ! Ippo!
As for the media, fan boys will be happy latter on - lots of stuff to show, i cant say, but the db guys have been busy ( even when at the pub pulling pints )
The place is a confernce, think UNI, but for game devs. The show part is today, and its free, so come on down to melb ( Jetstar have good rates, mention my name for a discount :P )
I've gotta say a massive thanks to Fork, BigBird, Tarky and INtense for inviting us to show off Dystopia at Free Play. Mad props for Fork for putting in the hard yards and lining it all up of us. We went down there really having no idea what to expect and have come away very happy to see that a network of young and driven indy devs exist right here in our little country called Australia.
Being able to hook up with like minded people and share war stories, encouragement and advice was a brilliant oppertunity.
In terms of direct help to our development of Dystopia, watching people from such a diverse range of gaming backgrounds play our game was fantastic. From hardcore gamers to people who'd never played an FPS before, seeing how people pick up the game allows us to see it with completely fresh eyes.
Well then, I am back yes!
@Hunter - We were flat out ALLLL weekend and with no net most of the time but the images, interviews, writeups and pics are coming. I still haven't slept yet and I'm getting it all together now!
@Fuzzy - No, thank you guys for coming! It was an awsome pleasure to like 'be affiliated' with you guys for the weekend.
@amckern - Good to meet ya too!
@Guest - SHOW YOURSELF! =p
Ok back to video editing!
Yeah fuzz, what Fork said, our pleasure and it was an honour. I really do think you guys got something outta it and i defiently believe we will be returning next year, and will come in droves. I need to talk to the Fork Machine about some new ideas :D!
Great news though, they want us again!
Woot! I'll be saving up for an aeroplane ticket for Australia then (they're not excactly cheap :P)
ahahah, scotty the outcast :p
Yeah .. but he did have a PREEEEEETY big weekend work wise so his head wasn't exactly screwed on.
So what was the prize for mentioning MODDB?
And was this event limited to over 18's? I was going to go, but one of my fellow modders for BF:A was working.
There is no Age limit at all. There wasn't really a prize either! =p
The prize was our fantastic company :P
Only one shot of the booth?
I got many more, so they will be shown in my Final writeup.
Nightfall got a good offer - Commercial publishing with Telstra Games Domain - Aint it wonderful talking too random people, and find out they are the head of the department???
I hope dystopia, and the db had a wonderful time, as I did meeting you guys, and also pub’ in it as well - I might even see you at GDC
Adam
Woo, I'm in a picture :D
It was great to have a talk to a few of the ModDB guys and the Dystopia guys :)
Yay, 2 piccies with meeee! I wonder if anyone knows who is me.
Fun :)
It was indeed! :D
We cant wait for next year, and its going to be bigger and better of course!
In "(modDB @ Free Play! Spot the site creator!)" who's the guy on the right?
Shortcutman!!
The pimp/gimp.. =p
The guy in the middle of that photo oh so so so hot!
