The game features massive level maps on both land and space. Players will cross the vast scape on foot as a trooper or in a starfighter as a pilot.

The idea is to let the player fully experience the battles during the Galactic Civil War. The large maps allow for periods of anticipation and involvement before battles, and of course for massive starfighter and troop battles on both land and space maps. With the ability to play each level as either side and focus on land or sky, the game allows for an extended amount of play and diversity. Since the game does not rely on scripted cinematics to convey the plot, each time a level is repeated, the overall experience will differ, and of course the outcome. Not each level needs to result in victory to progress to the next. Even if the player is killed in battle, a group of cameras can be used to view the rest of the battle, from a multitude of positions to create sequences that form a film.

Play as an Alliance spy and go behind enemy lines to capture vital intelligence. Blast thru the battlefield as a main trooper, or land on enemy territory and assault their forces as a marine. Scream across the stars as a pilot in a starfighter, defending the fleet, or bombing the enemy. Relive the epic battles of Yavin, Hoth, Endor, and other pivotal battles of the civil war, from its beginning to its end. Twenty nine levels of fully accessible structures, an array of blaster weaponry and vehicles, and a variety of different extra bonuses.

The Empire must be unlocked by completing the Alliance Campaign, that or, sequentially, by each "act", or level.
