At the beginning of the development of Gothic 3, Piranha Bytes decided not to licence an existing engine, because none of those was able to render the world of Gothic 3 without loading screens. That's why they coded an engine by themself, called "Genome Engine". This multithread designed engine offers a great foresight, dynamic lighting (including self-shadowing), a dynamic weather system, depth of field, high quality reflections and bloom or rather HDR based on Pixel Shader 3.0 and DirectX 9. The vegetation rendering is provided by SpeedTree as well as Bink Video Techonology for video cutscenes, Ageia's PhysX physics engine for physic simulation and FMOD Sound System for sound playback.

People play Risen often without looking in-depth for solutions to these problems they encounter. One can only watch on streaming platforms, how many of them struggle with the problems. To bypass some impassable obstacles, often cheats are used. These are the bugs that occur:

  • The mouse sensitivity is too high on high resolution monitors
  • Loading screen images are stretched because they were prepared for 4:3 monitors
  • The game cannot detect ultra widescreen resolutions, and the interface is stretched on 16:10 monitors
  • The character disappears when climbing ledges

For all these problems comes Risen FPS and aspect ratio fix. It comes with

  • FPS limiter
  • new loading screen images
  • changes values in the INI files to make the game run at any resolution and aspect ratio, like 3:2, 16:10, 16:9, 21:9, 32:9, and lowers the mouse sensitivity

Risen 16:9 before

Risen 16:9 after

Risen 21 9 after 2

One of best engines for its time, I still play gothic 3 and I dont feel the same when playing other open world games as gothic.
Gothic including 1,2 & 3 is different from storyline to graphics.
It runs a bit heavy but its awesome, I wish to see a new Gothic soon.

Have you checked any of the Risen games? They all run on this engine too.

Kinda laggy in Gothic 3, makes my PC feel rusty, but play this with a good Dual or Quad-core, and it'll be one of the most epic experiences!
