It's amazing just how well this works. The Lost Mission lacks EAX but I do love how well this worked.
All I could ask for past this would be a coded exception for voice files so they come in clearly while the rest of the sounds use EAX. It was odd for Id to put in support for EAX in a game they never bothered adding subtitles to.
Sadly if you remove the EAX from the voices they will be barely hearable. That's why some voice channels are using separate EAX present, in order to make them more distinct.
Quite late response, but here we are. No, you don't need OpenAL compatible hardware(or other work arounds), DOOM BFA comes with OpenAL-soft, which allows it to use those extension directly on software (no hardware requirements).

Do I need to use this with creative ALchemy or anything? I have a sound blaster so I assume it just finds it automatically.
