(Mass Effect Updated/Improved Textures Mod) by CDAMJC
Hello Mass Effect modders and mod users,
I'm trying to fix some of the "uglies" in ME1 and give it the polished look the epic story line deserves. So far I have updated/re-textured: Light and Shadow Maps on walls and floors, Kaidan, Tali, Garrus, Wrex, Liara, Saren, Benezia, Udina, Council, Anderson, Joker, Chakwas, Geth, Colonists, Scientists, Keepers, Normandy, Mako, many NPC clothings, Geth ship, volus, hanar, elcor, some armors and default character armors including N7 armor (of characters re-textured). This was Achieved by texture editing (up-scaling, repainting, adding details, adding texture, and rebuilding normal maps). Finally, but probably my favorite, I made a new Film Grain Texture to replace the muddy Film Grain with a much less obnoxious ME2 "looking" effect. Now you can keep film grain on and still have a crisp picture.
Requests are always welcome :)
0). Yes step zero :). Install the game fresh with DLC if you plan to use it, especially if you are updating from pr-2018 MEUITM or any other ME3Explorer based mod. (you can still install the mod on a game that's been run this just is the ideal way to start)
Install vanilla Mass Effect and DLC.
**This mod is not compatible with old pre-MEUITM for file structure reasons. You need reset to vanilla before installing the new version, there is currently no way around this. If you don't the installer will abort as to avoid breaking your game**
1). Run Once. Now we can run the game one time before doing any texture modding so all files are set up by the game it also builds the shader cache with the soft shadows. This is also a good time to go in and Max Out in-game graphics settings and choose your gaming resolution (use left and right arrows to see resolutions not displayed in the drop down in game menu). Also if you've never played Mass Effect before please run around a bit in vanilla so you can see what it is the mod is aiming to improve.
2). Install any other mods that you want that are non-texture based now (they can also be texture based but MEUITM will overwrite any that are covered in it).
Mainly this applies to same sex romances, Xbox 360 controller support, any mods that alter the games files etc...these mods will break MEUITM and the game if installed after. Install the mods for vanilla compatibility (Ignore MEUITM versions as they refer to the old pre-2018 MEUITM which is incompatible.)
MEUITM Anniversary Edition is the new version of MEUITM, it uses MEM with a user friendly installer.
Smaller download size, More localizations support (only textures are being installed), Improved performance, Perfect mipmap function, and boat loads of new and revised textures.
Special thanks to Aquadran for MEM and all the support getting this going including the nice installer! Special thanks to CreeperLava for pointing me towards MEM, support, and all of the work on ALOT!
1) Extract the MEUITMAnniversay.zip.
2) From the extracted folder, run MassEffectModder.exe and click "install".
3)Follow any prompts but mostly kick back until it's done and then launch MassEffect.exe like normal.
Happy New Year enjoy...:)
FPS Counter (Nexus) Alternate Link (Pharago website)
All users could also be interested in FPS Counter because it adds SweetFX/ENB style color, sharpening, and lighting tweaks in game with a slider menu and the best ambient occlusion support you can find for Mass Effect, a feature ENB sweetfx gemfx and Resahde are all missing in Mass Effect. Download, tweak away, and enjoy!
Install the "soft shadows" by extracting the contents of the zip file in to your game directory example: "C:\Origin\Mass Effect\" Then for them to take effect you must clear the shader cache, to clear the shader cache (steps heavily taken from Pcgamingwiki.com):
1) Go to %USERPROFILE%\Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect\Published\CookedPC.
2) Delete LocalShaderCache-PC-D3D-SM3.upk.
3) Go to \BioGame\CookedPC.
4) Delete or rename LocalShaderCache-PC-D3D-SM3.upk.
5) Restart and behold soft shadows.
The game will take longer to boot on the first run after performing the above steps. This is due to the engine recaching. Following the first boot, each subsequent boot up should be as normal.
Lastly, to match the screenshots you will need to install the MEUITM Reshade locatated in the mod's "addons" sections. Simply extract the contents in to the binaries folder in you Mass effect install directory.
**Note- FPS Counter is not compatible with ReShade so you will need to make a choice as to which one you want to use.**
The most prominent issues:
These will cause random invalid page faults and crashes. There are pages and pages online of people with this issue back to 2008. Google is your friend here. Usually a fairly simple bioengine.ini fix which will vary depending on your audio hardware.
This is caused by playing the game on any post 2008 AMD processors (bulldozer or later chipsets) this is because Mass Effect is seeing AMD and looking for 3D now instruction sets that existed when it was made. AMD has ditched these instructions in their latest processors causing miss timings and faults in communication between Mass effect and the CPU. Due to this you will also see black textures for characters on Noveria and Ilos.
Video of the issue on un-modded game with workaround fix: Youtube.com
**The black blob character texture bug is now completely fixed by FPS Counter, see link above**
This is a known game glitch see the link below for the fix: Pcgamingwiki.com
You didn't clear your shader cache before running the game because the shadows from Daemonjax completely resolve this problem.
This is a result of an incomplete install or Origin updating the game back to vanilla, or installing another mod after MEUITM which has altered things to be incompatible. To fix, try first reinstalling MEUITM. Make sure to Disable Origin's auto update feature for games. if it still persists uninstall and then reinstall the game.
This is the results of MEM detecting a modified game, it may or may not be a problem. If you have modded with MEM then it most likely is fine, but if you are attempting to install MEUITM over a ME3Explorer modded game then you will have issues, possibly black textures or crashes. Do not use ME3Explorer to mod Mass Effect 1, only use MEM. If you see these issues and have not used the old MEUITM or any other Me3Explorer based mods, click continue and you should be fine.
This is rare and seems to mainly affect the disc version. It is antivirus related. Some Antiviruses such as Avast can delete the save immediately after saving. Make sure to allow Mass effect.exe to anti your virus exceptions to resolve the issue and any other issues it may cause.
If you backed up the vanilla files, you can simply delete the modded versions and replace with your backup then delete the bioengine.ini in the My Documents\Bioware\Mass Effect\config directory.
Uninstall the game through windows program manager, delete the bioengine.ini from the My Documents\Bioware\Mass Effect\config directory and then reinstall.

I'll check the video out, just ran the installer for mass effect steam with no effect. I also had to change settings in the ReShade as they were set up for an origin installation
Got it all up and running through steam, man it looks fantastic. The facial textures! Had to do a little tweaking of the reshade to my own liking, thanks so much for bringing this classic to a modern standard.
And not to mention, without touching anything, the mod has fixed my years long audio popping noise during cutscenes. Absolutely the best i'm speechless
Thanks, and thanks for sharing about the reshade. I'll see if I can make it universal somehow.
I updated ReShade, it should now work regardless of game install directory, disc, steam, or Origin :)
Definitely going to try this out, downloading now.
I linked a new install video to youtube
This is a new version of the install video with updated process. I also added some more troubleshooting tips, some fancier effects/transitions, sound effects, and just more fan service.
See the mod description for quick access to the video.
I hope it's helpful and I hope you enjoy :)
Is this a whole new install process, because I used this mod before and there were instructions to install a large address aware exe patch as well as config file changes to Mass effect before this modpack would work properly. Are these steps no longer necessary or just missing from the information here?
LAA is now integrated so no need to add anymore. Completely different installer than the original MEUITM.
Thanks, I ran the game once saved and installing it now :)
is there a "Extract & Forget" version?
I have RUS Gold Edition version, so it's can't pass hash check
and if I continue, NET Framework error occurs on "Checking Mipmaps" or something
Pastebin.com
hint: don't use ZIP compression on *.mem files, 7z LZMA can't compress it better otherwise
You could use the old 2014 version for extract and forget but it's old and glitchy. I used a Russian localisation version as a base to build it to support the most languages I could, but because of the way Mass Effect is packaged it caused all kinds of issues for users.
The new version uses MEM which works better for most and is a little different by modding only the files that need to modded directly like a real installer rather than a copy paste style (slapping parts of the russian version on people HDD) like the old mod. This can cause hash check fails since MEM is comparing to know hash sizes etc...There are so many repacks not official it's hard to keep up and if purely pirated we don't want to go out of our way to support this. The mod is tested working on Russian localisation but maybe not Gold edition I think it works on Galaxy edition? Again the reason this version works is to support users who wanted Russian subs and menus with English dubs-that required a repack version support. The support is not official but I just tested in working as I typed this, no crash.
As for LZMA it saved 300mb on the 7z file and to upload to mod sites files must be in an archive so I don't know what to say to that advice :/. The compression used granted me the smallest upload, which people with limited bandwidth greatly appreciate.
Lastly some users with this issue over at the Nexus reported the conflict coming from Mako.mem and Normandy.mem. Removing those from the mods folder resolved the issue for them, but I can't recreate it to test. Maybe give that a try if all else fails. The user did not specify they were on Gold edition, but I have a hunch they may have been.
gave a second chance and it installed (with errors)
Pastebin.com
it's OK? That files should only have text inside, I think
quick test and game working
looking good
awesome job!
anyway how did you compare files?
afaik they are compressed with LZO, maybe that why there different hash, but content may be the same
so maybe better decompress them first with 'Unreal Package Decompressor' and then compare?
>>it saved 300mb on the 7z file
it can save more if the source files were not already compressed (original size is ~6GB, or something)
I compressed it to 1.84GB for archiving (but I used SREP+LOLZ and recompress it with pZLib3)
hey, i just let you know, I replaced MassEffectModder with a new version and the installation went w/o errors
except one: Splash mod failed to install!
but I guess it doesn't matter to gameplay
anyway I'm going through the game again and I noticed that sometimes the speech in dialogues disappears on the halfword
maybe this because game don't use all available RAM?
it's 32bit application, so with LAA it should use ~3GB, but I get only ~1,5GB max
any hint how to increase RAM usage? I tried everything in BIOEngine.ini
Latest version of MEM should replace textures with correct Unreal compression to resolve dropped dialogue. This is something the MEM programmer and myself worked out through me reporting the issue and him being very smart lol. The new installer also auto patches LAA. RAM usage was not the cause in the case it was using a multithreaded compression from ME2 and ME3 in a game engine that doesn't support it ME1, that should be resolved now though.
Probably out if bounds, but I'm playing ME1 on a MacBook via PlayOnMac. Do you know if it's compatible with this version?
If windows is properly/fully emulated to support the features it uses, I don't see why it wouldn't work. But I have not tested and don't own a Mac to test on.
Pardon me, but I attempted the .7z download since I am not really familiar with torrents, but when I attempt to extract the .7z's content, i get an error saying "not enough memory". I am unsure what the problem is, as I should have enough memory on my disk. Perhaps it is RAM? In any case, is this something you can help me with?
With Regards,
Philip
Use 7-zip program to unzip. Winrar gives this error message.
Hello there,
I love your work, this mod is amazing, for me I used to use the old one that need a lot of work, yet time passes and I rather have things be easier then harder, yet I'm having problems.
First I used to extract it normally and just install it, well try to install it, and every time I get an error (microsoft.NET Framework error). So I did what (Amir Parsoei)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34hHia0Sq0c
(Amir Parsoei) on youtube comment section said
6 months ago
Had same error and I fixed it. This is what I did.
Running Win10 x64 bit and Mass Effect 1.02
1) I deleted the mod MEUITM folder and extracted it again
2) put my PC in airplane mode and I turned off windows defender "Real-time protection
3) I re-ran the installer in NORMAL user mode (before I was running it in administrator every-time which the older installer says not to do)
4) done - no more error and getting stuck at 74%
Yet I got another problem, now it is saying (Game files are not vanilla or not recognized)
My game is downloaded through torrent, along time ago, I think 2012, my copy is pirated, yet the old mod the worked fine of course through hard work and step by step installation, but as I sad, I am looking for an easier way.
So please if any one have an answer to my problem, that will be great, and thank you.
Good Day.
The old version worked completely differently (ME3Explorer vs MEM Build). So apples and oranges there, but the old version was unintentionally more pirate friendly due to how it worked. This version does not have antipiracy or anything, it's just that pirated versions are altered in a way that makes them incompatible with the installer since they are essentially "broken" and MEM is trying to maintain proper file structure.
What version/language are you using?
Also good time of the year to find the game dirt cheap. 4.99 on steam right now. Mod will work perfect with steam version.

What is the indirect sound option at install? Thanks from Australia!

Indirectsound.com
You probably don't need it (most users don;t and it defaults to off in the installer), but use it if you surround is broken when playing Mass Effect.
How do I import the alot thing? It wont let me download anything.
Shame steam doesn't have a workshop and cant get the dlc that is supposed to be installed for the second game to even work...probably just refund and go back to my console versions.
Nice job on giving Mass Effect 1 a fresh, sharp look
Hello, thank you for your mod.
Unfortunately I'm having a problem I'm getting a microsoft.NET Framework error.
Can you help me solve my problem?
Thank you in advance.
