Description

(DEPRECIATED - OBSOLETE - newer version now available) Jane's WWII Fighters was released way back in 1998. It is considered a good WWII Flight Sim in it's day. I still have my original CDs. I always felt that it has a good balance between Simulator and game. Have recently gotten the bug to play the game again, I set about getting the game running and looking as good as possible on modern hardware and operating system (Windows 10). For a video game that, as of this posting, is 22 years old, I think I managed to get the ol' gal looking pretty good!

Hello, Thanks for this but I'm getting a strange graphics problem. Everything is white except for the cockpit. The outside of the planes are white and the ground textures are very bright and mostly white.

I've had this problem once before using dGVoodoo with a old arcade game called Master of the Skies : The Red Ace. In that game I fixed it by changing the DirectX / Miscellanneous option to Force vSync in dGVoodoo. It has no effect with this game though.

I only tried the "Fly Now" option to check the game. I chose the Spitfire.

I'm running a Radeon RX 480 8GB Graphics card on Windows 10 64bit.

Any ideas or tweaks I could try ?

Thanks again.

I'll have to see if I can replicate the issue. I'm on in Nvidia here so not sure if that is making a difference. In the meantime, try loading One of the plane sets and one of the terrains in the mod manager and see what happens then. Other thing you could try is downloading the latest version of dgVoodoo and add the glide files and then go into the game's video setting and configure it the game to use the glide wrapper aand see if that makes a difference. Also Reshade can be disabled using the End key in game.

Thanks, I got it. Simple enough fix I stupidly didn't try to begin with. Everything is fine now and looking great. All it took was adding the dGVoodoo/DirectX/Miscellanneous/ Fast Video Memory Access option and there it is. Everything looks great.

I've owned the disc version of this game ever since 1998 and the Anthology as well. This is the first time I've been able to actually play it. A big thanks to you hip63 !

One more thing. I also checkmarked the Force vSync option but not sure if that did anything at all to fix it. I'm too busy playing to check at the moment.

I am having 2 issues here, I set the res to 1920x1080 in glide & direct x in game it says its running at 1280x800 but if i screenshot it is in full res, so is it in full 1920 by 1080? also with this all setup the original cfg file seems to not have effect now, & I notice if I turn gore on it is not on in game & I cant change that option any other way, is there a way to to change it through this glide wrappers config?

ogre is working for me once I enabled it the ww2.ini. The planes are modded so that maybe a factor. I was flying the FW190 and saw gore in the cockpit when the pilot got shot.

I got the resolution to stick, but I don't see if gore is on still when & if the pilot gets hit there should be blood.

& I cant seem to lock the game at a solid 60 fps, it keeps going to 105fps, even with the max setting & putting 60 next to it, it does not save it & then it runs the res right but not the frame rate & does not save it when I exit game & look back at settings. I am trying to have gore enabled, & 60 fps solid, is there a way to do this through this mod?

Try the Force vSync setting under the DirectX tab in dgVoodoo. Also if you have an Nvidia Card, you can set a frame rate limit in the Nvidia Control Panel in the Manage 3D settings. AMD cards may have something similar called Frame Rate Target Control (FRTC) I believe. See if those doesn't help with the 60FPS lock.

Yup so I figured all of that out & now I have it at 1920x1080 in all her glory at a capped 60fps, however I still have one last issue, & I remember this happening in the old days to, if I am in cockpit mode only & I fire machine guns my frame rate drops by 20 or 30 fps, but if I hit F5 & shoot from the extended zoomed out tail view not a frame drops, I wonder if being to close to the smoke effect is messing with it, my other theory is that it might be because for some reason, it wont let me run this game with my nvidia card so I am using my default windows gfx, which are doing everything fine, my computer is plenty powerful. if I try to use my nvidia card it says I don't have direct x files.... I really just want it to run perfectly, but somewhere a conflict must be going on, I know on my old laptop that ran in 1280x800 this never happened, so I don't really know what is up. & if I run it without using the wrapper but directly to this computers direct x, the frames wont drop when I fire but I can only play in 1280x800.... so it seems i sacrifice gfx for perfect frames or frames for perfect gfx, I am sure there is a way to fix this tho, I.v tried so many things & cant quite get it right, so for now I rather play 1920x1080 & dogfight in F5 then fly in cockpit, but that is still a bit annoying :( any idea's?

I got out my gaming laptop which has a similar intel/nvidia gfx card setup but I can't replicate your issue. I works properly on my laptop. But did find this: Answers.microsoft.com

Okay so now everything runs perfect, once I tried diff planes? it only does this is if I choose the P38-J??? so weird? I guess I can just not use that plane, tho it is a bit of a bummer...? all other planes don't lose frames when firing in cockpit view.

I notice tho all the other planes textures look really nice in the enhancements, is this plane for some reason still using old texture, maybe that is it?

Unsure, I didn't build the plane so... maybe?
Also try using a different plane pack and fly P-38 again and see if that makes a difference. I personally haven't encountered any issue in the P38.

So I tried turning the hd textures off & on in mod manager, it made no difference, only with the p38-J does this happen hd textures or not, other then that the entire game works just fine & all other planes & etc? lol this is weird.

I have tried to install this, but first my antivirus kept quarantining the files, but now the application is looking for MusicPlayer.exe.
What app should I be looking for?

the music player is just for playing music during the install, nothing more. It's not a critical file.

McAfee keeps nuking it, even when I tell it to allow the program files etc

I only see a gamma'd view on the opening menu and all over the museum. The text boxes are reg and green but no text is visible, and the planes are a basic gray. Nothing seems to be fully loaded into the game? I am dying to play it again

Hi made an account just to get some help.
I am playing on an Acer Helios 300 and for the life of me I cannot get the game to play right. The graphics look great, but the performance is horrible and delayed. I keep trying to mess with the "Advanced Settings" run by Voodoo but when I change an option and hit Apply, it doesn't actually change it. How do I go about doing this? I really want to play again. I currently have the original game installed from a CD and it runs fine. This laptop runs a lot heavier games so I'm not sure what's going on.

Thanks for making this, hip63!

Just a side question, do you by any chance know how I can download the music in the game in it's exact glory as I remember from my childhood? I'm trying to see what I can use to process .elb files, but just asking if you're already tried.

Thanks if you answer here!

Edit - Found it in the tools section. Bloody amazing! :D

Hi, this is wonderful, thank you!

However I can't seem to change the graphics settings in the launch menu. I open "Advanced Graphics" and get the dgVoodoo control panel, I then make some changes in the Glide and DirectX tabs, click "Apply".... but when I reopen the Advanced Graphics tab everything has reset to defaults. What am I missing?

Thanks again - what a great update for this game!

Hello, I downloaded the game and it works great! But I cannot seem to get the Eastern Front airacraft to show up despite having the Eastern Front maps active with the Plane Set mod active in the mod menu. Any tips?

Love seeing this game working again. A couple of the mods are giving me trouble though, I run into crashes pretty frequently while using the African or Mediterranean plane/terrain sets, and the USSR plane set crashes when I launch. Any ideas for fixes? (The european summer, spring, and winter sets all seem to work fine)

Hello,
First off thank you for this package! Really brings back old memories of childhood. I am having two issues, wondering if anyone knew the solution:

1. Games askes for CD 2 to watch the videos in the hangar. How do i get this content?

2. I am trying to install the Add on CD, the Frontend installer asks to locate the file WW2.exe, but the file in the game folder is WW2FLauncher.exe, which the Frontend will not recognize. Anyone know a workaround?

Thank you all in advance!

Yeah, you need CD2, I think the original disks are available here on moddb. Not sure what you need form the AA-On CD since most of it is already included but the ww2.exe is located in the WWII Fighters 2020\WW2 Fighters folder.

I just tried to install and am running into an issue with the graphics, could really use some help. The intros all run as white and black static and most graphics are not displaying in the main menu, I can just see "fly now" but everything else is indistinguishable/white. when I do to "fly now" all textures around the aircraft for 300 yards don't render correctly and the P-51 is a blank white. I've updated Reshade and tried a ton of different shaders in DgVooDoo but nothing has fixed it.

Hello, thank you for this great mod the game runs like a dream, and also works with nvidia 3D Vision and looks superb in 3D.

One problem, even though the Force Feedback toggle is on in the options, it does not work. The joystick is Logitech Force 3D.

When i play the original game (installed from the CD) on my Windows 98 computer, with the same joystick, Force Feedback works.

Any ideas at all?

found this, it's for IL-2 but maybe it might help, one user commented to install an old version of the logitech software: Reddit.com

EDIt: I just noticed this, in the main game files, look and see if you see a file named: FORCEF~1.IFR and rename that file to: forcefeedback.ifr and see if that helps

Yes that worked! Renaming the .ifr file.
Good catch, thanks for that!
Wonder why it was misspelled but FF is back. Thank you

It's an old windows legacy naming thing, old versions of windows had lower character limits to file names, so probably from the original old CD installer or something. Since I don't have a force feed back stick, I never noticed.
