DaggerHell V1

Daggerhell borns from the wish of combining two great FPS: Doom and Devil Daggers.

After an intense week of work with Photoshop, Slade3 and Zdoom wiki, I feel the project is in condition to be published.

Daggerhell is mainly a gameplay mod, the 9 classic weapons have been replaced with a sword (replaces chainsaw), and a magic hand with several types of attack.

In the hud, we can see the amount of magic charge (primary and secondary ammo).

Slot 1

Basic Hand: minimum damage, doesn't consume ammo, the last resource. The secondary attack is the mod´s surprise (this one consumes a lot of ammo!)

Sword: primary attack is a powerful blow, capable of killing pinkies with one try. Secondary is the same attack as basic hand, but with greater damage.

Slot 2

Green hand: primary attack emits a continuous stream of daggers, great for weaker enemies. Secondary attack is a multiple and spreading shot, is powerful and wide, but with less accuracy. It's great for large groups of weak enemies or the ones with average strength.

Slot 3

Red hand: it`s a superior version of the green hand, damage is greater, and so is the speed of projectiles. It´s effective for all kinds of enemies. Primary attack differs from the green one, the daggers don't penetrate through monster nor bounce on surfaces, but are extremely powerful.

Protip!: daggers rip through enemies and are capable of bounce on surfaces one time (except the red hand primary attack). Each level of penetration, and the bounce, produce an increasing probability of offensive damage. It´s a good strategy to bounce projectiles when possible and align enemies for economize time and ammo.

Every killed enemy spawns gems, the amount of these depends on the potential threat that each one represents. An imp will spawn a gem, while a revenant will spawn 4. Gems contain ammo, therefore, if attacks are well planned, the player shouldn´t be left without ammo, except in the case enemies are overwhelming. The intention is to generate a flow in combat and reduce the search for ammo.

While holding the primary attack, gems stay in the same place. When you don't shoot, you attract the gems. When you use a secondary attack, they are pushed away.

While the offensive potential is significant, also is the probability of death.

Installation details and recommendations:

I haven't tested different GZDoom versions, but I think it should work with several of them, even maybe Zdoom. Anyway, the best thing to do is to download the latest build.

The compressed file contains:

a_daggerhell1d.wad: the main content of the mod, the rest is optional.

b_JPdaggerHUD.pk3: jpalomo´s JPHUD mod, modified to avoid conflicts with daggerhell. (https://www.moddb.com/games/doom/addons/jp-hud-mod-friendly)

The load order is as always. You can use ZDL or the following command line:

gzdoom –file a_daggerhell1d.wad b_JPdaggerHUD.pk3 c_ketchup5.pk3

Any mappack, must be loaded first to avoid conflicts, and you should use maps that don't use custom monsters.

Technical details:

Almost everything in the mod is done with Decorate, the most part is made by me, excepting the following:

The sword code belongs to a mod called "epicus", i liked it a lot, and decided to give it a try, and it stayed.

The hud is a heavy modification, of one made by Sgt_Mark_IV.

The sound has been extracted from "Devil Daggers", and modified with "Ocenaudio"

The source of the graphics are basically two: the epicus sword, and the hand is from Realm667, both with modifications using Photoshop. Explosion and hit sprites downloaded from google.

About compatibility: I had to make the sacrifice (due to limitations of my coding skills) of making it incompatible with monsters mods, because the physics were heavily altered to make the gems attraction system work. But, it's highly probable that I´ll add compatibility for several mods, the first that I´ll probably do, is "Colourful Hell".

In case of having the time to keep updating it, the main objective will be to balance the ammo/damage ratio, and add compatibility for monster mods. The main idea is to keep it simple.

Daggerhell nace de la necesidad de ver combinados dos grandes de los FPS: Doom y Devil Daggers.

Después de una semana de intenso trabajo con Photoshop, Slade3 y la wiki de Zdoom, siento que el proyecto está en condiciones de publicarse.

DaggerHell es principalmente un mod que altera la jugabilidad, las 9 armas clásicas han sido reemplazadas con una espada (reemplazo de la motosierra) y una mano mágica con diversos modos de disparo.

En el hud podemos observar la cantidad de carga del disparo primario y secundario de cada arma.

Slot 1:

Mano básica: genera daño mínimo, no consume munición, sirve como último recurso. El ataque secundario es la sorpresa del mod (este consume mucha munición!)

Espada: el ataque primario es un golpe potente capaz de matar “Pinkies” con un solo intento. El secundario es el mismo ataque primario de la mano básica pero con mayor daño.

Slot 2

Mano verde: el ataque primario emite dagas continuamente, ideal para enemigos débiles. El ataque secundario es un disparo múltiple y dispersivo, es potente y amplio, pero con menos precisión. Ideal para grupos de enemigos débiles o de resistencia media.

Slot 3

Mano roja: es una versión superior de la mano verde, el daño es mucho mayor, y la velocidad de proyectiles también. Es efectiva para todos los enemigos del juego. El ataque primario difiere en que las dagas no rebotan ni penetran, pero son extremadamente potentes.

Tip general: las dagas penetran a los enemigos y son capaces de rebotar en superficies una vez (salvo el ataque primario de mano roja). Cada nivel de penetración, y el rebote, generan un aumento en la probabilidad de daño ofensivo. Es buena estrategia generar ataques con rebote o con enemigos alineados.

Cada enemigo muerto libera gemas, la cantidad depende de la amenaza que pueda representar. Un imp libera una gema, un revenant libera 4. Las gemas contienen la munición, por lo que, de administrar bien los ataques, el jugador no debería quedarse sin munición, excepto en ocasiones que sean demasiado abrumadoras. La intención es generar dinamismo en los combates y reducir la búsqueda de munición.

Mientras se mantenga el fuego primario las gemas permanecen inmóviles, al no disparar son atraídas, y al liberar un ataque secundario son empujadas.

Si bien la capacidad ofensiva es muy grande, también lo es la probabilidad de mantenerse en situaciones de muerte.

Detalles de instalación y recomendaciones:

No he realizado demasiadas pruebas en cuanto a versiones, creería que incluso debería funcionar con Zdoom sin problemas salvo por unas pequeñas modificaciones de escala en los proyectiles. De cualquier manera descargar la última versión disponible.

El comprimido contiene tres archivos:

a_daggerhell1d.wad: contenido del mod, el resto es opcional.

El proceso de carga es el clásico, pueden usar ZDL o la siguiente línea de comandos:

gzdoom –file a_daggerhell1d.wad b_JPdaggerHUD.pk3 c_ketchup5.pk3

Cualquier paquete de mapas, debe ser cargado en primer lugar para evitar conflictos, y siempre utilizar mapas que no reemplacen monstruos.

Detalles Técnicos:

Casi todo el mod esta hecho con Decorate, en su mayor parte el contenido de código es mío, exceptuando lo siguiente:

El código de la espada pertenece a un mod llamado “epicus”, me gusto mucho y decidí tomarlo para probar, y se quedó.

El hud es una intensa modificación que hice del original creado por Sgt_Mark_IV.

El sonido esta extraído y modificado de “Devil Daggers”, el software utilizado es “Ocenaudio”.

Gráficamente extraje la espada de epicus y la colorice, la mano es de Realm667 con varias modificaciones de color. Las explosiones las baje de google.

Con respecto a la compatibilidad, tuve que hacer el sacrificio (debido a mis limitaciones con el código) de que no sea compatible con modificaciones de monstruos, ya que el sistema de atracción de gemas altera el comportamiento físico. Pero es más que probable que añada compatibilidad para diversos mods, el primero que tengo pensado incorporar es “Colourful Hell”.

En caso de tener tiempo para seguir actualizando, el objetivo será equilibrar aun más la relación entre daño y munición, y añadir compatibilidad para otros mods de monstruos. La idea es mantener la simplicidad.
