Since early 2002, Shee Labs has been a group of individuals working to produce free game and media downloads. With ever-fluctuate staffing, Shee Labs continues working behind the scenes on various exciting projects for a bewildering array of areas. Shee Labs ceased to exist in September 2009.

Post news Report RSS Want to learn Unreal? Dive in at the deep end with Shee Labs!

If you want to mod Unreal but have little expertise, then you may find yourself working alone for a very long time before having a valid skill. Have basic programming skills? Shee Labs might have something for you...

Shee Labs Game Development is always cooking a nefarious scheme or two. In fact, at present our talented team is working behind the scenes on an exciting new total conversion project for Unreal Tournament 3. We're sure you'd love to help out, but then you haven't got the skills, right?

This is where our new 'Mutator Week' and Framework schemes come in.

Besides working on a very impressive, complex project, Shee Labs are knocking up a few other toys - in fact we're specifically working on a few frameworks that we intend to open source and distribute to other mod developers. We hope that by sharing technology, everybody can benefit from learnt skills instead of a special few.

However, if you have a little bit of programming behind you, then after reading up on a few Unreal tutorials, you may find you have nowhere else to turn but yourself to assist your learning.

This is what Mutator Weeks are for - members of the Shee Labs development team will regularily participate in a small in-house competition aimed at helping rookie developers and experienced developers do something a bit different. By recieving a bi-weekly theme, programmers are challenged to be creative and produce a short snippet of code, and then compare it with everyone elses. Get really stuck with something that should be so simple? Well that's not a problem - there are other minds ready and willing to tap directly into.

So, if you've got a bit of programming in you, and you've read through some tutorials, why not get in touch, send us a message and we'll see if you fit in.

 'Till next time

This sounds awesome.

Would the previous programming experience have to be in unrealscript or can it be with any language?

If not, where can I get the fundamentals for the unreal language?

No previous Unreal experienced is required - just a bit of object orientated programming.

I highly recommend this book, then trying a few tutorials:

Hey! I'm a programmer with experience in all kinds of programming frameworks. I've only recently been getting my hands dirty with Unreal3 - both the Ed and Script... Of course, I've tried the basic mutators through tutorials. what do you suggest next?

I'll try and check it out in the library.

I've experience with Actionscript 2.0 which has procedural and object orientated programmng, but another book won't harm.

Gah, the book isn't in the library. I'll have to order it next week.

I'll just dive into the tutorials. I've got the special edition videos as well.

When would this scheme be taking place anyway?

The Collectors Edition videos don't cover coding, only mapping... So they won't help you make a mutator
That was a right shame I thought :( But then the Shee rescued us :D

If you mean for tutorials, Ambershee has a few up that will help you get going. For the mutator, I don't believe we have released any other details quite yet.

This sounds intresting. Is it going to be held at irc or here at moddb?

Neither. For the time being, we're going to be using e-mail and subversion (e-mail for contact, subversion for file sharing). Later the e-mail will be replaced with a wiki, which can be used for both documentation and as a means of discussion (like a forum).

I'd say sign me up, but I think moddb is a horrible place to attempt to do anything that involves back and forth communication.. :(

We're not communicating via ModDB, we have an external subversion server, and will soon have a private wiki and forums running just for the Mutator Week project.
