What started as idle chitchat has turned into something promising. Towards the end of 2011, several students, while sitting in class one day, were casually taking about job prospects around the Twin Cities area. Even though there are several game companies in the area, the focus of those companies were not in line with our current educational background. Our schooling to that point was focused on using products such as the Unreal Game Engine, 3ds Max, Adobe’s Illustrator and Flash and just a touch of Unity. Several of the area companies focus on creating board games, card games or game testing. We were more interested in creating computer games. The limited number of companies in the Twin Cities area would have left us competing for the same job at the time of graduation if we were going to remain in the area.
One student suggested that our instructor should start a game company. We jokingly agreed that we would work for him after graduation. The conversation soon turned into “we should start one, that would be great,” to “well, why don’t we?” That pretty much started the ball rolling with a couple students. In informal discussions, the two suggested a few more names of fellow students to each other and that lead to the first formal meeting on January 26, 2012.
With our new group, we discussed our goals, strengths, and desires for the company. We quickly set about creating our first project, hopefully leading to many more fun and exciting titles. We hope that From Nothing Game Studios will become a prosperous and well-known company in the Twin Cities market.
