Allows the highest widescreen display mode for all Mechwarrior 2:31stC/GBL/Mercs games (MS-DOS only). Play through Dosbox, D-Fend or similar emulator/frontend and utilize your display aspect ratio.
It's compatible with all the Mechwarrior 2 games (31st Century, GBL and Mercs), MS-DOS only. There is a readme file included with the RAR summarizing known issues and/or anyone experiencing less than perfect output.
Installation:
1) Go to any one of your Mechwarrior 2 root directories, then find the 'VFX' sub-directory and go into it.
2) Find the original MCGA.DLL file and rename it to MCGA.BAK. Next, copy the new MCGA.DLL file into the VFX directory. If ever you want to delete the modified DLL, you can change the original file back to normal
3) Change the window and fullscreen settings for Dosbox. Set the window resolution to 1280x768 and the full screen resolution to 1366x768 by editing the Dosbox configuration files. If you don't know how to edit Dosbox config files, there are tons of tutorials available to help you achieve this. Or you can always use a front-end like D-fend Reloaded, etc and set the full screen/window resolutions that way. Set the renderer to 'Surface' in the graphics settings.
4) Run the game in Dosbox. Push 'ESC' to open the settings in-game, click on 'Combat Variables' and change the resolution to "320x200", this will point the game to the modified MCGA.DLL file. Now you're set to go!
Sexy! Would this MCGA.DLL be compatible to use on a non dosbox version of Mechwarrior2, aka playing Windows 98?
Hi Bfox,
No, it needs Dosbox to work. The surface renderer crops out the blank portion of the screen at the bottom and brings the active image to fullscreen. A non-dosbox version on windows 98 would display the entire 1280x1024 image, including the blank portion at the bottom.
Essentially it'd look like this: Moddb.com
