Binoculars behave like zoom scopes, and optionally identify enemies. Nightvision uses nicer shaders than the putrid green vanilla default.
Mahzra's Package - Night-vision and flashlight demo - Mod DB
Video. This is both the night-vision from this addon and the Better Vanilla headlamp from that addon.
UPDATE v1.3: Added optional zoom scope behavior without identification for binoculars and High Contrast NVG Tier1 alternative.
I was messing around replacing the tier 1 nightvision shader with various alternatives, and found the high contrast shader. It's a much nicer and much more useful vision enhancement than tier 1 nightvision.
Hey
here's a crazy idea
how about for once I show some screenshots of this highly visual addon?
(as an aside, one reason I keep forgetting to add screenshots to this is because I never have access to tier 2 and 3 nightvision when I remember. stupid toolkit quests. no easy access to upgraded equipment! :D)
So Tier 1 only for now. [Slight update on this post: tier 3 screenies below the tier 1 screenies.]
BEGIN DEMONSTRATION.
Ever after ][][ mentioned it I've noticed that yeah, it always fucking rains when you're taking screenshots. Fortunately, that's just what I needed for this scene. Up yours, weather!
Now, let's imagine we are CSI - Rostok. Much like the weather, our vision is kinda shitty. This is the crime-scene. WHODUNNIT?
ENHANCE.
Vanilla tier 1 putrid green nightvision.
Brings to mind that Futurama meme about the goggles doing nothing. Maybe if I illuminate things a little, say with a Better Vanilla Headlamp or such like.
ENHANCE.
Vanilla tier 1 putrid green nightvision + headlamp
A little better, I guess. Not great. Maybe the improved tier 1 nightvision will actually improve things.
ENHANCE.
Enhanced Vision Tweaks tier 1 putrid green nightvision
... I can safely say that yes, the goggles do something. My fucking eyes. But, I still can't really make out any details. I know that this is an improvement over vanilla tier 1 nightvision in dark dank labs, but not a big improvement. You still want to upgrade this to tier 2 or 3 at your earliest opportunity.
But, against my better judgement, we're going to light this shit up like it's Christmas. ...
ENHANCE?
Enhanced Vision Tweaks tier 1 putrid green nightvision + headlamp
You know, that one actually hurts. I apologize. Let me take you back to better times.
bettertimes.jpg
Just so your eyesight can recover a little before I show you the new and improved tier 1 nightvision. I know I needed a break from all that bright green. Okay, that's better. Last one, guys.
ENHANCE.
High Contrast tier 1 nightvision
Now, let's just get this out of the way first: I know it's piss-yellow. I know! But it does help make out details better. Just a little more detail, maybe, possibly, please?
ENHANCE.
High Contrast tier 1 nightvision + headlamp
AHA!
Clearly, this is a case of death by natural causes. This investigation has hereby concluded.
All joking aside, this is much nicer vision to use. Actually makes it worth getting on the Steel Helmet, for example.

So did some quests and got my nightvision upgraded to tier 3. I'm skipping tier 2 because that's just a slightly inferior night vision to tier 3.
Tier 3 screenshots:
Hello darkness my old friend
Nightvision tier 3.
Nightvision tier 3 + headlamp
If I have to be out at night at all, I prefer it to be on clear nights.
Holy shit so many stars! That may very well be all of them!
... so yeah anyway extract the things you want to the place you want 'em
(you're gonna want 'em in your CoTZ directory)

UPDATE v1.2: Binoculars behave like zoom scopes
In vanilla and AO3, binoculars have crazy zoom capability and always default to their max zoom level when you pull them out. This has been driving me crazy since day 1 and I never looked at fixing it.
Turns out it was a really easy fix.
Binoculars now have the same max zoom as the TARS sniper scope, and remember their last used zoom setting like sniper scopes do. Finally. Sanity.

UPDATE v1.1: when will I learn that it's never just a quickie
Added a faster, smoother preset to the binoculars. Default identification speed is 4, the smooth preset doubles that to 8.
8 identifies per second. Per mile. Per instant.
For shits and giggles I tried the identification speed at 100 ips... I could see forever. 8 is nice.
--
Just a quickie. Does what it says in the summary.
The binoculars only have the identification frames, not the terrible beeps. I figured that if enemies can instantly identify me as a threat from kilometers away, I should be able to as well. Doc helpfully described in his config file how to re-enable the identification feature.
(I love Doc's documentation, I always feel awful when I hack shit up in his files)
The nightvision isn't 100% black and white. Some color bleeds through. It's actually pleasant to use. I yoinked them from Misery.
Grab the files you want, these are not merged. Contains AO3 and vanilla binoculars versions. The nightvision shaders will work with anything.
