Post tutorial Report RSS Garry's Mod 10 Personal Skin Making (Updated 08/08/09)

My First tutorial here it's to help everyone learn how to skin and make themselves personal skins for their use or others use.

Posted by on - Basic Skinning

Ok so you want to learn how to make a skin? You've come to the right place.

You will need:

Photoshop

GCFScape

Photoshop VTF Plugin

To start us off exit Steam completely.

Next start up GCFScape and go to File>Open it will take you right to your Steamapps folder, open up source materials.gcf

Content.screencast.com

After you open source materials.gcf you will see these files

Content.screencast.com" class="linkification-ext">Content.screencast.com

Browse to hl2>materials>models>humans>male and Right click Group01 and extract it to somewhere, I suggest making a folder called C:\My Skin and save all your skins there to keep organized, so extract Group01 to C:\My Skin

Go to C:\My Skin and open up Group01>citizen_sheet.vtf with Photoshop (make sure you have installed the vtf plugin correctly)

Content.screencast.com" class="linkification-ext">Content.screencast.com

Now for the fun part: skinning
First things first, go to Image>Image Size and change it to 2048x2048

Content.screencast.com" class="linkification-ext">Content.screencast.com

Now take out your Polygonal Lasso tool, and cut out both of the shirts. Make sure you get just the shirts and nothing else (like the small under shirt round triangle things).

Content.screencast.com" class="linkification-ext">Content.screencast.com

After cutting out the shirts go to Image>Adjustments>Desaturate while the shirts still selected create a new layer, fill in the layer with whatever color you want, and then right above Layer 1 there will a box that says Normal, change it to Overlay

Content.screencast.com" class="linkification-ext">Content.screencast.com

You will notice the color takes form to the shirt and you have recolorized it.

Content.screencast.com" class="linkification-ext">Content.screencast.com

Move onto the pants now, cut them out like you did with the shirt, careful not to cut out anything else.

I usually don't edit the pants too much, just make them brighter, or put a pattern over them

Example 1:
Content.screencast.com" class="linkification-ext">Content.screencast.com

Example 2:
Content.screencast.com" class="linkification-ext">Content.screencast.com

Now we move on to the under shirt which are these.
Content.screencast.com" class="linkification-ext">Content.screencast.com
Content.screencast.com" class="linkification-ext">Content.screencast.com

Follow these instructions

Content.screencast.com" class="linkification-ext">Content.screencast.com

We're almost done now! Just go back and look at everything and make changes to what you want and get things how you like it. After you have done that save it as citizen_sheet.vtf in your C:\My Skin\Group01 folder, when it asks to overwrite the old citizen_sheet.vtf say Yes.

Content.screencast.com" class="linkification-ext">Content.screencast.com

Congratulations! You've just completed a skin, now time to go test it in game.

Browse to your Steam\steamapps\garrysmod\garrysmod\materials\models\humans\male now open up C:\My Skin and copy paste "Group01" into "male". The skin will now be put in game and ready to use.

Video: Screencast.com" class="linkification-ext">Screencast.com

Thanks for reading, I hope I helped someone.

I cannot find my steam \ steamapps \\ garrysmod \ garrysmod\ materials\models\humans there for I cannot find humans\males and put the folder there.

I've gotten to materials, then inside there, there is no folder named humans.

You need to make the folders yourself if they aren't there already.

They don't show up in garry's mod. I put them in the materials folder and put them in their own folders too, but they don't show up. Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure you are putting "citizen_sheet.vtf" into materials\models\humans\male\Group01

Yes you can use other programs, it's just Photoshop is what program i prefer. However there are such things called "torrents" if money is an issue.

If I had to recommend a free program, I'd go with Gimp. Gimp.org

Paint Shop Pro = My fav too <3

Its personal preference though really. It's just what I learned to use so it's easier for me but some people also prefer Photoshop.

I have done all of those and I have redone it all but still nothing.

Um... My Gmod folder doesn't have Male01 or whatever. Only Female.

You need to create a folder called "Male" then. I've mentioned this in the comments above, please make sure you look there for any questions first.

This is a really good tutorial but it effects 1/3 of the male citizens. How do you apply it to only 1 male citizen so that hes the only one that has a custom re- skin?

You would have to follow a hexing tutorial for that, there are plenty out there. Try this one Facepunch.com.

So instead of opening a counter strike ragdoll open up the preferred male one.

Hey, awesome instructions! I have sort of a noobish question-How do you import pictures so that you can put the pictures on the citizen's uniform? For example, I'm trying to make a Dharma Initiative jumpsuit, but I can't figure out how to import the Dharma Initiative logo onto the Citizen sheet. PLEASE HELP!

In Photoshop while you have the citizen_sheet open, go to File>Open in the top left corner. Then open the Dharma Initiative photo and when it opens click and drag the photo on the citizen uniform.
