We all come in contact with technology on a daily basis. That’s the main reason why computer science specialization has become very appreciated. As a student at this kind of specialization, you need a laptop or PC with above the average performances. Apart from that, you need an operating system that makes the most out of your laptop.

The tricky question is, which operating system should a student choose? Well, we will highlight the main advantages and disadvantages of each operating system. Once you know them all, you can choose the one that suits you best.

Windows

The main advantages of this operating system are related to its long existence. Having been used for so many years, in terms of user experience, is top-notch. It’s very easy to use. Everyone has used Windows at least once. Another advantage would be that fact that it’s compatible with a very large scope of software and hardware.

The main disadvantages would be the price, its security, and the software costs. Unlike Linux, Windows has a price range between $50 and $100. In terms of security, this operating system is very permissive. All this leads to lots of infections and reliability issues. Last, but not least, any software you might want to use for Windows is very expensive, prices being above $200.

Linux

One of the main advantages of Linux is the fact that it is open source and free to use. Also, it provides high performances on workstations, such as servers. Another strong point of this operating system is the stability it provides. Being a stricter operating system, it’s a lot harder to get any viruses. Last, but not least, the improved control over your operating system is a big plus. You can control every aspect of your operating system.

In terms of disadvantages, the main one would be the difficulty to understand it. Being a software mainly used by developers, it can be quite tricky to get to know it. Also, in terms of software, there are only a few that work on Linux.

Mac

Mac has become widely used in the past decade. The main reasons for this fulminant ascension are its simple and effective interface, its top-notch security, good hardware and software integration, and the great variety of useful applications. In terms of interface, even a two-year-old would be able to surf the internet. Its very strict kernel will make sure you won’t get any viruses along the way. Also, there are lots of apps that come with it.

In terms of disadvantages, the high cost of the products is the biggest impediment. A decent MacBook will lead to a 4-figure price and that’s quite a lot. Also, the tight connection between its hardware and software makes it very rigid to updates. Last, but not least, being a very young operating system, there are lots of software producers that don’t offer their products for MacOS.

Conclusion

Now you know the main advantages and disadvantages of these operating systems. Compare them and choose the one that suits you best. As a former computer science student, I would keep a close eye on the budget.
