I feel like there is something inherently disturbing about being trapped in a nightmare. At first you know your in a dream because you just got slammed into unconsciousness and the abstract nature of it is very dream like (like the beginning of his other mod, Afraid of Monsters) and when you wake up you try to find your way back home but quickly you realize the world isn't quite the same anymore and there are monsters lurking about... you realize your still dreaming.
Or maybe it's the real world now only you're hallucinating and you can't tell whats real and what isn't anymore which is more frightening because of the real consequences that arise from your actions.
However like Afraid of Monsters it does still feature back tracking but atleast this time there isn't much of it and your not wandering around aimlessly in the dark to find a button or the door it just opened.
This mod is far more refined to the point where the game doesn't even look like its running on the HL engine.
Mainly because it uses non of the HL textures, everything is new.
It takes the notion of a personal hell (reflecting a persons real life) and actually explores it beyond the vagueness of the previous mod.
You have a very old school styled inventory with limited carrying capacity for your bag/pockets and you can actually move fast when you need to and dodge incoming enemies. I like it.
Your mobile actually functions like a real one and so you can make calls assuming you have someones number. It doubles as a flashlight ...nice, I'm surprised no one thought of this before.
Your melee options are actually quite decent and you can fend off the lesser enemies without it being to easy.
The storyline and scares is what keeps you engaged. And its scary.
Even if the enemies border on cliches it doesn't matter, you know what they represent.
My only 2 criticisms are I would have preferred a bit less fetching keys and a bit more puzzles, and the pacing is to fast (enemy after enemy)
