Wow... Quite honestly the best custom story ever. It's EXTREMELY scary just as the actual game is and Anxt pulls this off in a major success. PLAY IT NOW
*NOTE* I did give it a perfect score but I'm going to be honest that the difficulty is a bit too hard and he should simplify some of the things and make some things more noticeable. I don't think that this should take away from the score though so I have decided to keep this at a perfect score.
An excellent, the best, non-storyline mod for Doom 3.
Its graphical enhancements makes the game much more enjoyable, revitalizing it, it does not make it look like a new gen game, but it definitely improves the graphical appearance overall.
The gameplay improvements are just as good, overall dificulty is increased, but in a good way, you won't have a problem killing any of your enemies, but they won't have a problem in killing you either. Gun damage has been reworked, every weapon is usefull in their own way, some enemies can be better countered with certain weapons and they all look sexier!
Excelent mod, download this now!
Poor resource system and a very long build time for units ruin this game. The combat and other game mechanics like transports and unit training are very well made. Units on transports can fire at enemies if they have ranged weapons. Unit training is also interesting, you select one of three units and customize them to your situation. You can equip weapons and shields and ranged weapons. The resource system is very bad however. Gold is used to train and build structures and units. Only a limited amount of workers can use a gold mine which limits your income. Food is required to supply your troops but you cannot trade food for gold. Gold mines also have a limited supply so eventually you will run out of resources to build troops.
Personally I think that the mod looks awesome. You can see all the hard work done for it. It works pretty well exept for one thing, spawns. You should really think spawning places again, couple of runs and you know exactly where your opponent is going to spawn. Got 50 kill streak on Bespin by just standing on the enemys spawn and electrocuting them.
A very fun and addicting experience that I much prefer over HL2: Deathmatch.
The creation of forts using the blocks you are given challenges the mind to go wild and create what ever the user wishes. Because of this, source forts is never the same game twice. There's always new strategies to try out within each map.
It's disappointing to see almost all textures reused from Half-Life 2 in these maps however. I understand it's based in the same universe and can't really complain but more original textures and maybe even character models would make this mod stand out from the rest of the Half-Life based mods out there.
With that said, it has been a long time since I last played the mod so it could have improved on my outdated impression.
In the end, it's worth the time investment but from what I gather from various people on the mod's main page, there seems to be no servers which is a shame. :(
Interesting, to say the least.
I just felt that Heart of Evil has no place on the source engine. Granted, it's fun interacting with the environment and the ragdolls are a nice edition, but it just looks... ugly.
I can see that the port took a lot of work to accomplish, but I'd rather stick with the original heart of evil.
But that doesn't mean you shouldn't overlook this mod, give this a try for the porters and curiosities sake, it's not terrible and it can be interesting playing through HoE once again in Source.
Mind numbingly stupid scientist slaughter.
But the creative death traps and humorous postmortems (Astronaut Jim had a close encounter XD ) plus the awesome special effects make this a must play for all you sadistic gamers out there who need to leave their brain at the door every once in a while :D
