Review of The Club (PC)

The Club is the console port that not many have heard of, and frankly that not to surprising since most sites doesn't even list this as a PC game. Before i start my review id like to add that i did NOT buy this game, in fact sales must have gone pretty damn bad for this game since SEGA (the developer) is giving away Cd keys at their website. I don't usually pirate games but I thought to myself "Why would they give me a free cd key if they didn't want me to play it?.

Don't get me wrong here, this is not like a trial cd key or anything with limitations, no the full game with all multiplayer feats and leaderboards are included in this cd key. I have been playing for a week now and I don't think it will stop working.

Anyhow lets jump to the story section.

The Story

Well for starters most players enjoying this game will do it for the leaderboards and don't really care for the story at all, just like with the Unreal series the developers try to give some motivation for the killing even if its not needed.

You play as 1 of 6 different character and you have been kidnapped for different reasons depending on the character and you have been invited to "The Club". A club that act like present time gladiators and the main key is to stay alive during the different events of the tournament.

Gameplay

When i booted up the game i usually go for the campaign option, now this is called "Tournament Mode" so i started with that.

So It starts you of with letting you pick a stage, at the time you begin there is one and more get unlocked as you progress. Then there is Difficulty and there are 4 different modes to choose from. In almost every game i go for medium or hard so I picked the second most difficult option and went to the loading screen.

So here is how it goes. Each level in the tournament have a certain amount of stages, most of them are pretty similar, kill guys, get a combo, exit the level with the biggest score. But there is some variation. My favorite game mode was the Seige mode where your alone and have to stay within a small area and kill waves of badguys.

Now this is my first point to the list of complains about this game, every game mode except the seige mode is literally IMPOSSIBLE to complete on the first try on hard difficult, they expect me to score 2 million points and i get about 30 thousand. I retry as many times as i can and i failed to get the bronze bullet (3rd place on the scoreboard).

So i go back and lower the difficulty, Now the tide have changed and i seem to score about 1 million points on every stage when the record i have to beat is 30 thousand, now as you understand there is a HUGE gap between the difficulties and i cant seem to find a happy medium.

Presentation (Graphics)

Well the graphics in this game are great, and the optimisation is really good and you will have a constant 60fps on most computers because of the amazing Unreal 3 engine. The only thing i don't like is how the game looks an awful lot like gear of war, the same camera angle and the same sprinting animation.

Another thing i don't like is the sound, the music is great but all the gun sounds like bee-bee guns either its a plastic "daka daka" sound or a tiny "dok dok dok dok".

Conclusion.

I liked this game, because it feels like the next gen arcade game, and it was free. But it lacks a lot of things, the gameplay is repetitive and you will be doing the same events over and over the only thing that is changing is the environment.

But with awesome graphics ( yes they are very nice and the destructible environments are awesome) and some adrenaline pumped action this makes it a pretty good game. 7,5 /10
