Wait, video reviews? *hides*

I would vote for both round-tables and retrospectives if I could (can MDB handle multiple-choice polls?). That's definitely the most interesting thing for me. Reviews of full games, on the other hand, I don't think fit into MDB's brief at all. Not that I want to demean Joe's excellent work on them. :)

I have to say, focus on the mods; the whole discussions with mod groups, and retrospectives on (not necessarily fallen) older mods and where members are now would be nice to see :)

It would be nice to have a 'topic of the week'/'featured discussion' stickied and discussed on the forums for 1-4 weeks and the most pertinent posts compiled into a feature on the same topic. Comments could also be emailed/PM'd anonymously if required.

The sort of titles I'd like to see are:

Tips for leading a mod
A discussion designed to provide aspiring or existing mod leaders with advice for best practise. At the close of the discussion period a member of the ModDB would compile an article from the best comments in the thread and those sent via email/PM. Team members could have their say in how they think their leaders could improve their practise, and experienced leaders could share the knowledge they've acquired over the months/years since their first project.

Most <adjective> mod
A discussion with the objective of letting the community have their say. Awards could be given, both saving ModDB staff research time and creating a more balanced and wide-reaching selection process. Mods deserving attention for outstanging achievement in one area could be showcased by their fans, instead of the more popular mods receiving all of the attention (and all of the best modders). Possible areas of discussion could include Best Storyline, Most Original Storyline, Most Original Concept, Most Underrated, Most Potential, Most Accomplished Remake/Port, Best Western Mod, Best <engine> Mod, etc.

Best Engine to use for a <genre> mod
A discussion aimed to advise modders with startup projects which engine is best suited to their requirements. Players and modders will have the opportunity to give examples of mods in the same genre that use different engines, giving their opinions on what worked well and what worked badly. The final article would prove a valuable resource for mod starters who could seek advice from mod leaders who have already discovered how to implement a certain gameplay element. Relatively unused engines would get the recognition they deserve if they were proven to beat the 'most poular' competitor.

---

This sort of thing would greatly improve the amount of people visiting the forums and the amount, or sense of involvement the community has in the running of the ModDB. It's also mostly community-created content which uses already existing features ('forums' and 'features' sections), which won't mean a lot of extra work hours for the site staff or content writers. But, most importantly, it's an opportunity for members to share the knowledge and improve the service the ModDB gives to its users.

Yeah, nice idea Crispy. The only problem is the users themselves. But even when you've got the usual tripe, it can add to a feature. I'd be willing to give it a go. :)

Well, tripe is perhaps an exaggeration in that example. But it is certainly true that forum discussions about things like 'X is better than Y', even if it is restricted to 'at Z', get ugly.

Aghh! I posted a very long comment here. It obviously didn't work out. Anyway, the gist of it was that I would like to see round table discussions, as well as articles by mod leaders and post-mortems of mods and games. I think that Moddb is big enough to get interest from industry professionals, as well as high-profile mod teams. I think that post-mortems and regular articles would do a lot for the moddb feature section.

Why not do them all? Video reviews of mods is a great idea, but so is like a weekly show that looks at current mods and old mods and where people went.. those are all great ideas.

I don't think that video reviews are a good idea. I mean, who needs video reviews when you can just look at the news or mod profile?

... mods. I think discussions with mod leaders and speaking with projects that have gone by the wayside are the best ideas.

I would love to read interviews with the top teams, like Dystopia, Red Orchestra, Damnation, and see how they accomplished what they did. Hearing from others who haven't quite made it would be valuable as well, to hear where things went wrong, what they learned. More information is invaluable to up-and-coming modders.

I can get game reviews, comics, and coverage of industry events at a million other sites.

If you want to run contests, maybe it could be an ongoing monthly thing. Best character model, weapon, mutator for a monthly prize or something. Make people come up with new content for it rather than just drawing a name out of a hat.

To think I nearly voted for the comic strip. Actually a comic strip would be cool! :)

I voted for the round table thingy. It's always interesting to hear from veterans of the scene.

Why not mind our own business?

Well, considering it is the third highest thing voted for on the poll, apparently people want to know. Seems like a good enough reason to me.

Investigating stories people are interested in and want to know is what Journalism is all about, as ducktape alluded to.

And because we are nosey pricks.

So there.

I'd say stick with things relating to mods. The retrospectives on fallen/older mods is such an incredible idea. There are a bunch of modifications that never saw the light of day, and I wanted explanations for why things fell apart, or wondered if the authors moved on to other things in the mod scene. Articles like that could even resurrect interest in truly unique mod concepts.

I'd say stay away from comics, developer events and video reviews - they'll just take time away from what this site is about. There are already tons of VG comics around the net, and sites offering full coverage of industry events ... don't spread yourselves too thin! Hosting footage of mods in action would be a good idea in support of screenshots however.

Other than that, keep doing what you're doing. =D
