Wow a 50%-50%...
I voted for Games, not mods. Mods are very good, but it's the original games which bring them to life.

Woot, 100% at second vote keep it goin! Games are great, but mods sometimes bring out what ppl actually wanted out of the game. Stressing sometimes, some mods are just crap.

Why must all polls be black and white? Mods are great but they simply can't beat a good old AAA retail game.

And here i am thinking that it's always been like that, since you have to have a standalone (retail) game to even be able to create a MOD. :P

Considering the two games I've played most consistently over the past half decade, Day of Defeat and Counterstrike, it seems obligatory for me to vote for mods.

The most fun I've had with online gaming has always been with custom content.

Tiberian Sun?
Modded it to allow for a faster paced game and a few extra units.

FreeLancer?
Played on a mod server that has additional content to give the veterans something to do except level up.

UT2004?
Played StrangeLove games constantly, and loved it far more than regular CTF.

Like previously stated, why must there always be a strict yes/no answer when it comes to the voting on this site. I understand thats the point of a vote but its more like a referendum than a vote, when you vote you have a choice.
I personally dont think that mods are the best games but there are many that are better than a retail game, it would have been nice to say that without the need to leave a comment stating it.

I don't think there are enough options really to make a black and white decison like that, but when pushed I'd say 'no'.

Natural Selection is one of the best games I've played, but does it beat Zelda or Final Fantasy? Can it compete with cutting edge releases (when they were actually cutting edge in terms of gameplay) like Quake? Command and Conquer? If we're honest, no they can't. But a lot of the time ideas I see in modding get me much more excited than next year's promised game releases (using yesteryear's game designs and a lick of paint).

I wish I could go 50/50 because I'm both a modder and stand alone developer so WTF?! I voted mods only because I've worked on them more than stand alone.. but that'll change soon.

Many original games just rock, like Baldurs gate 2 and Final Fantasy VII. This cannot be replaced by a mod (not even by a really good one of which many are in the making or released)

While there are alot of games coming out which are just clones with a different coat on. The same goes for mods, and the a lot of mods die.

I voted No, simply because mods cannot really compete, due to resources that the pro developers get. That doesn't mean they are the best games no, but it helps alot, and it means the standard of these games tends to be higher on average. If I was to name my top 5 games, I don't think a mod would be in there.

I'm gonna have to say games, most mods end up having you follow them for years. They usually end up dying, or plainly suck.

There are exceptions though.

I was about to vote for games, because the absolutely best games are the ones created by developers with both money and ideas. However, since Counter-strike has been the overall best game ever imo, I had to vote yes, since it was originally a mod.

I know that everyone truly wants to believe that MODS are the best thing and beat the commercial games, but reality is, 90% of the mods that are released are pretty crap, poorly thought out, badly executed and very small and shallow. That said, some of the mods that have been released in the last few years have upped the bar to levels of the commercial games and even exceeding them in quality and originality. So, I hope one day that the mods truely outstrip the multi billion dollar megalopoly the game companies now lord over, as heart and dedication goes far beyond a paycheck! Take the crappy games Mad Doc software have been employed to produce (Star Trek Legacy and now Empire Earth 3) and I am amazed that companies are getting this poor quality excuse for a software development company to make them. Stop being so cheap, and get a some modding crew to get some real games out there while getting payed!

I guess that people voting for mods were voting that they were better than games because 'you' are the one who makes them.
I voted for games because I didn't see the question this way initially.
Go games, go mods!!

You ***** dont realize most mods dont even get finished. How could they be better than original games? First of all they depend on them to exist and second, no mod, no matter how good it is, is match for any gaming classic from the 90's. I sugest you all mod noobs to drop CS:S for a while and go play some good games who dont envolve people shooting inch other in a packed server. Mods are nice complements, but rarely they can replace the originals. Even the whole process of modding is absurd in point view, given the number of people involved on it and the number of mods finished. Mods only suck important resources from indie development crowding all resourceful people on projects who rarely get finished.

I'm not saying i'm against modding, but everything that is taken to an excess usually turns out bad. This is what is currently happening to modding. An excessive crowding spawns a lot of premature projects which will lead to nowhere, wasting precious time and resources.

i would think mods because the new features on most new standalone games come from previous mods or modders ideas and what do you mean wastes time and resources it is very simple don't want it don't download it n0 waste!!!
