Why? Well I mean it is impossible to keep anything like this underwraps... I mean they would have to be using another engine, and well at least a minimal amount of information would have been leeked... it just aint happening at the moment

apparently valve ain't working on it yet... some other comapny is working on the fundamentals so when they hand it over to valve they've got something to work with... or something

I'd say no... they could very well be working on the models and whatnot, but they might be putting it on the Doom III engine. Then again, the UT2K3 engine also supports a lot of stuff (just doesn't look nearly as good).

HL2 will NOT be on Doom3 engine and NOT on UT2k3 engine. It will use a largely modified Q3 engine.
HL2 will also NOT be on E3 this may. You don't have to await a release before the end of this year.
Valve didn't release HL until it was really finished, not like that UT2k3 crap engine and that 'eat-to-much-resources-just-to-look-cool'
; engine of Doom3.
HL2 will be (hopefully) well developed like the precedor and not a useless buggy nerv-killer just to squeeze out exhaustive amount of money out of gamers thinking benchmarks and over-blown engines rule the earth!

I may be off to E3, if I am and it's there I'll hook up my PDA to my mobile and get the word on here within 30 seconds of me finding out.

So many contradictory statements in here, isn't it clear that we don't know either way?

For me that's clear. I know about a some statement I read somewhere that hl2 is scheduled for release not before end of this year so not at E3, that's for sure. And about the Q3 engine I know for sure it will be. Especially because they would follow an old tradition with this (HL one's based on q1/q2 engine mix).
And to E3 I will surely not go... waste of time. Wait for the reporters of your favorit news mag to tell you one day after beeing there what's going on... saves time, money and this day delay I can really get along with ;=)

Uh, Dragonlord, when developers are choosing an engine to base their game on, quite frankly they don't care about tradition. They care about which engine would be the best for their game. One time it may be a Quake engine, the next time it could be some unknown engine by unknown German developers or something. It has nothing to do with tradition.
Oh, and you suck, Doom III is not simply a 'eat resources just to look cool' engine. It's a 'properly use resources so it can play, look, sound, and feel cool and scary' engine

Trust me, there is no engine more optimized than a John Carmack engine.

May be that it is well optimized, I can't tell from my own experience because I can't run it on my pc (and I don't want to) but I just heard some statements from friends about it (well... how trustworthy, I don't know). About HL2... It might be possible they could use another engine but in that topic I'm more than sure what they use a Q3 descendent because what I read about at different places is pointing heavily in the direction of Q3 and it wouldn't surprise me.
But in the end, we have to wait to see what happens. If it's Q3 based I'm happy because I can run it perhaps, if it's a DoomIII descendent I'm not because I don't have to bother even think about trying it out (which would disappoint me).

Its no ones fault that people prefer better graphics than a compatible on all computer engine. I prefer the best graphics with a rich story and great gameplay. Actually all engine can do that but the game developers prefer ease of use and some engine which will get the job done.

It's true people prefer graphics but I haven't seen new games out there which having all, mostly the graphic parts outweights the other parts and this really pïsses me off. I guess this depends on the requirements to have and the exceptations. But to be honest... the old games with worser graphics had much more style, fun, gameplay and story than todays games.
That's why I'm sceptic towards HL2 too. The only thing I heard about is what beautiful graphics and effects it shall have... damn... I loved HL for having a great story and not a big graphic... if it turns out to be a graphic-bloater like other games I would be badly disappointed... but since MS has its fingers in HL2 I'm very worried that this will happen *sigh*.

Don't judge by non-public tests, yer wicker face.

I WILL be going to e3 this year and find out myself.
