I had a bloody annoying children's learn typing floppy disk from Australia, I hated it so I used the knowledge I learnt from it and made up my own touch typing technique, which my sister says is just how a pianist plays a piano.
I use all my fingers, my thumbs grab the bottom row keys when my hands move to the top row and my pinky finger handles shift, I never touch caps-lock.
I'm the same, although I'll admit I actually used to play the piano. Still, it was a year after I stopped learning the piano that I managed to learn to touch type.
I was taught to use all your finger for the keys, thumbs for space bar.
I get an average of 60 wpm when there is a lot of punctuation, probably about 70 without it. The tests I took seemed to force as much punctuation as they could.
Maybe it's just me but I had typing classes back in second grade. Then again that was like a very long time ago. I then had a computer class senior year in highschool. Talk about a very simple class, everyone else was very confused.
I took a class (mandatory back in eighth grade for some reason). But nowadays, I simply lay my fingers across the keyboard along the homerow key columns... Like my left hand will be on a-w-[area between 3, e, and 4]-f. Once I start to type, I curl my fingers as needed.
i took a class back in middle school then realized i dont ******* care if i cant type normally, i still type fast and i dont even need to look at the keyboard.
I took a test online and got around 70 WPM. Guess all those typing classes in grammar school payed off! I don't like typing that fast though because I make a TON of mistakes and it is a hassle to go back and change them all.
80-95 words per minute here, on an online typing test.
Having grown up with PC games, my fingers rest on WASD and IJKL, with my left pinky handling shift and control.
Learned a bit with Mario teaches typing back in the day. But since I don't plan on being a court stenographer, my tying style has slipped to only one finger on my right hand cause that's my mouse gaming hand and can't be bothered to fully engage the keyboard. My WASD hand is much more adept at sharing the key pressing duties. :P
I pretty much type the same way, cept sometimes a second finger joins in on my right hand, although I can easily type without looking at well over 80 per min. My hands move like a mofo when I'm typing XD
Like some of the others, I had a keyboarding class in school, but... I cheated. I just went in the folder and copied other people's completed typing assignments, making minor changes and then saving it in my own folder (don't worry, I didn't destroy their work or anything malicious like that.)
So yeah, single finger typing and that all took me under a minute(55 seconds) to type.
Self taught, but very fast, mostly with 4 fingers. Sometimes I use 6 or 8. I type about 60 to 100 WPM. But if I type faster than 80 or more WPM I do much more errors.
I type without watching the keyboard mostly for messenger and serious gaming,'cuz i have the keyboard in a thing that slides back and forth in the desk and i was forced to always pull it towards me to see what i was typing but it was really annoying so i learned pretty fast! :) LOL @ originally thinking it's something related to touch screen phones and devices! :D But i can manage that one as well pretty good! :]
Yeah same here. I'm self-taught, and I type moderately fast (77 wpm). I took numerous typing classes that were required by my school when I was younger, but I gained nothing out of them probably just because I was forced to take them. But, after growing up playing lots and lots of video games on my PC (most being FPS), I always find my left hand resting on WASD, space, and left control; while my right hand rests on my mouse... you know, just in case there's a game that needs to be played right away... Gotta be prepared ;)
I'm actually using both hands for typing, but just like 2-3 fingers on each. And I'm missing keys on my new HP notebook :) It's layout is diffirent to my gaming keyboard but notebook has way better hardware than PC, so learning new layout isn't a big problem :)
Hmm, I use the Wasd with spacebar and I keep my right hand index finger in the J and pinkey on the enter, Everything else just goes where it falls, I type from there.
I'm a pretty damn fast typer, but I tend to not use the proper finger/key combinations. I do keep my hands on home row, but sometimes I use my ring finder instead of my middle finger. I also tend to not use my pinkies for reaching the far keys.
I can touch type, just not very fast or accurate. I usually just end up using 2 fingers instead since it feels more natural to me. (plus my wrists start to cramp up in just a few minutes).
I just got a new keyboard and found out my hands are not in the correct spot and now im forcing my self to learn the correct way.
lool,
you make so awesome polls....wut
i had a class for keyboarding

Not sure about other parts of the states, but that's exactly how they teach you to type where I grew up. I always assumed it was the standard.

I use all my fingers.
PD:Oh my god!!! The gcfexplorer logo in a avatar!!!
Great idea(avatar)...

I'm a Self Taught type and have my own way. I can usually put out between 35 and 40 words per minute.
40 words! a minutes wow. A+ effort. id be lucky to do that in letters :D
Same here, it's probably wrong but my record of 44 WPM average seems to speak for itself.
I took a test online and got around 70 WPM. Guess all those typing classes in grammar school payed off! I don't like typing that fast though because I make a TON of mistakes and it is a hassle to go back and change them all.

Then you CAN'T type that fast.. I can mash my hands on the keyaboard and get 200 wpm, but i don't get any of them right.. How does that sound? :P
Damn... I just took an online test and reached 56 wpm!! So much for 35 to 40 lol. I'm shocked lol.
Me, too.

It really is weird isn't it?
lol I remember playing that game xD
I type pretty fast. it is somewhat hard to prevent myself from creating spelling errors.

Like a pro...i am the coder :)
Self taught :P I'm slow, 40 WPM :((
I'm a programmer but I don't really utilize home row and I can easily type 120 WPM with a decent keyboard. I'm just too lazy to utilize home row.
Self taught, but very fast, mostly with 4 fingers. Sometimes I use 6 or 8. I type about 60 to 100 WPM. But if I type faster than 80 or more WPM I do much more errors.

My home keys are WASD.
Lawl, same here. XD self taught
I'm definitely not a slow typer, though.

I'm slow sometimes so... i'm part of the 48 percent...
I can type up to 80+ words per minute
took a speed test :D
I only use two fingers on both hands.. I don't think i'd need to be able to touch-type.
I had a mandatory typing class in elementary school for three years and then several more in high school, so I can type pretty well. Homerow and all.
I'm actually using both hands for typing, but just like 2-3 fingers on each. And I'm missing keys on my new HP notebook :) It's layout is diffirent to my gaming keyboard but notebook has way better hardware than PC, so learning new layout isn't a big problem :)
I can touch type a bit but i still make alot of mistakes
I use 2 fingers xD
I type with two fingers incredibly fast.
im very got when i type in english :D
but other than that like tagalog or japanese im very slow at it xD
yeh 2 fingers for my
ive created my own version of touch typing with 2 fingers, very fast sometimes ill hit the wrong letter though
Its fun not having to even look at the keyboard to type, although hard when trying to converse to someone sat next to you.
Talking to someone when talking to someone simultaneously is difficult.
I think learning by yourself makes things easier.
Hmm, I use the Wasd with spacebar and I keep my right hand index finger in the J and pinkey on the enter, Everything else just goes where it falls, I type from there.

i took a class for typing and passed it with an A but still dont know the whole keyboard

Like a pro. :D
