This month in modding...
June saw a mixed bag of mods being released with some old skool titles returning, some artsy mods being unveiled, some new single-player challenges to tackle plus the usual slew of HL2 creations.
The highlight this month has to be the rather original and somewhat bizarre "artsy" Flipside HL2 modification, which puts you in the shoes of an escaped metal asylum patient. Spin the world from a peaceful, sunny scene to a dark, dreary landscape. Turn innocent creatures into horrible enemies. Sound crazy? Sure is, but it is crazy enough to work and this mod ends up as a fun surprize packet with the main drawback being the fact that it is all over too quickly. This was made by a university team as a project, here is to hoping they get top marks!
The other highlight has to be the release of an old-skool HL1 favorite "The Specialists", who cranked out version 3 of their classic modification. Forget Max Payne and all these other games which claim they put "slow-mo melee" fighting on the map. It is mod teams like the crew behind "The Specialists", who create unique kung-fu fighting systems with big jumps and fast paced hand to hand combat, that really got this genre started, and the latest release certainly does not disappoint. So dust off your old copy of HL1 you ain't done with it yet - and re-enter this mods world with new weapons and tricks to try out.
For those that like to take the bad guys on alone, two HL2 single player challenges were released this month (HMS Defiance and Infiltration) and appear to be getting good press. More old-skool titles in the form of Classic Serious Sam II (for Serious Sam II duh!) and Eradication Wars for Soldat were also released. Finally for those playing C&C Generals: Zero Hour, v1.5 of the Unleashed mod was released this month, which aims to balance things out and up the realism levels.
That's it for another month, for those following our "Ultimate Tournament.com Player" competition the results were posted today. Stay tuned for more news next month and thanks for reading.
