Report article RSS Feed VOTE: elven-dwarven wars

Some people complained me about that little element put into game by me: The elves fight the dwarves in the north. That's because if they would only concentrate on the evil guys, Isengard and Mordor would be crushed in a weeks time. Read below!!!

The elves fight the dwarves in the north. That's because if they would only concentrate on the evil guys, Isengard and Mordor would be crushed in a weeks time. I know actually it never happened, but with this, the battles of Middle Earth are more complicated. If the elves and dwarves are in peace, that means there is actually no bigger battles in the north, only some goblin-raids broken in 2 minutes by allied elven-dwarven forces. In Eriador it would be OK, but in Mirkwood and in the Vale of Anduin? There have to be some fighting!
So the community should decide: shall this war continue (=Yes) or I shall finish it (=No)
Until 21st of March, there is a vote:
- only clear YES/ NO answers are accepted.
- please vote only once (the "vote" is a simple, short comment)
- all the "you should concetrate on the Lotr scenes, not this, but then I vote No/Yes" - tipical comments will be ignored!
- please don't comment about game crashes, problems etc here. thanks

my vote: Yes, I want action (Tonight :D )

Just make the evil factions stronger and until they are strong enough, I'm okay with the war. But do not let this war be the final Version, just too get more fun right now and later on, make peace between them and therefore new stronger evil factions

Yes if you keep the factions as is.

No if you add more factions to Mordor and Isengard to balance it out.

Personally I never minded this, I figured it was just the mechanics of the engine that all factions may declare war on each other. Even though it didn't happen in the lore, it still could. They are different nations, which would have border disputes and other issues to go to war over. To me it's fine and adds a bit of realism to the world, even though it's not 100% scripture.

Honestly as a huge fan of LOTR & Middle-earth in general, and a hardcore dwarf fan, the Dwarves barely contributed to the War of the Ring (Dwalin didn't move a muscle as regent in the Blue Mountains and Dáin only kept the Iron Hills & Erebor safe for those are the only dwarven kingdoms that still live) however, if you want to intense actions in the north you could always add Gundabad Orcs, Misty Mountain Goblins and add activity to Moria, seeing as there were dozens of expeditions to reclaim it ever since Erebor was rebuilt. All elves fought against Orcs from the West to the very borders of Rhovanion, and their last beef with dwarves was over an age ago. IMO, add more Orc & Goblin factions.

TL;DR No, add more dark forces.

As a "huge fan of LOTR" I think you forget that the dwarves were no longer a great power in Middle-earth. Just a hundred years before they had lost "half their number" fighting the war of dwarves and orcs - and that came after a thousand years of defeat, decline and calamity (THREE strongholds overrun, by balrog, dragons and then a dragon again - with great loss each time). By the time the War of the Ring came along, there really could not have been much left in the way of dwarven strength.

The dwarves - and the men of Dale - had their backs against the wall during the War of the Ring. They fought the Battle of Dale against the Easterlings, and then, defeated, were forced to take refuge in Erebor, where they were besieged. They never really go the chance to "contribute" in an offensive way. That said, if you don't count tying up the Easterlings in the east and preventing them from rampaging westward at will a "contribution" then I don't know what is! If the dwarves had not made their stand it would have been down to the elves to stop them - and they were already in similar dire straights themselves holding off the Mirkwood and Misty Mountain orcs! So in short, the eastern forces of darkness would have rolled over the elven woodland realms and then hit Gondor from the north - and that would have been that. The dwarves prevented that. Not bad for a people who "did not contribute".

You're right! I had completely forgotten about the Easterling threat, however, it is known that the dwarves did not send forces to battle in the South, or to any other major decisive battles whilst in the War of the Ring, like Belegost and Nogrod did against Morgoth, plus this mod is mainly based on the raging of the WOTR - and their absence in the major battles was completely justified, for the race of Dwarves were soon meeting their inevitable end not too shortly after the dawning of 4th age.

I think, however, that adding more forces to battle dwarves instead of re-igniting a war that has ended over two ages ago. I pray for Gundabad Orcs, and Misty Mountain trappers to be added.

Scutatus Feb 13 2015, 1:12pm replied:

You are correct, the dwarves did not send forces to the south to help Gondor - but I have already reminded you why. The Dwarven forces of Belegost and Nogrod did indeed fight Morgoth himself, as you yourself say.And so mighty were they back then that they were the only ones who could stand against the host of dragons, when no one else, not even the elves, were able to (due largely to their all encompassing armour and masked helms). But that was two Ages and 7000 years before the War of the Ring.

A lot happens in 7000 years. In Middle-earth, as I said, the dwarves went into decline, were expelled at great cost from one home after another, and by the dying days of the Third Age were a shadow of their former glory. Expecting the dwarves to field armies in the War of the Ring of the sort they could in the First Age against Morgoth, is a bit like expecting Italy to still be a super power today because of the Roman Empire two thousand years ago. Or more accurately, expecting Egypt to still dominate the world because it was the finest civilisation around in 5000 BC. It's nonsense.

In the First Age of Light the dwarves were a super power. But no super power lasts forever, not here, and not in Middle-earth. 7000 years later the dwarves were barely strong enough to hold one settlement and could do no more than basically fight a last stand defensive campaign. Hell, even the elves couldn't do any more than that either, so why expect the dwarves to do more?

Sorry Andrelm, I might have been missing your point. Are you arguing against the dwarves fighting ANY war or battle in the game at all, because they a) did not in Tolkien's history because b) they did not have the strength to do so? In which case, as much as I love the dwarves, I would have to agree with you. :D
