Post news Report RSS Virus Kills The Mod

Yet again a virus has made me unable to retrieve Wc3:WoW from my PC or even upload it online. It's not totally over just yet since I'm still trying to fix it, but so far... no chance.

Posted by on

For the past two days I've been trying to get my PC to load the desktop and applications on my computer so I can run a virus scan, a disk cleanup, and a disk defrag. Unfortunately, I cannot do any of the three. The computer either loads simple functions such as right-clicking very slowly or freezes completely before or after I get to the desktop.

What does this have to do with Wc3:WoW? Because it's the end of the project once again. This is probably the third time this has happened. This time I did make a backup file, but never uploaded it or put it on a CD because it's nearly 100mb large and takes an hour or so to upload. I'm usually too busy to do this. But finally, a virus has made it onto my computer some how yet again and I believe I've lost absolutely everything this time.

Sure there's other versions of Wc3:WoW I've got saved, but those are very outdated compared to my version. Mulgore, Durotar, and Warsong Gulch had much more progress made on them in my version than in the older versions.

If I cannot get my computer fixes within the next couple days, it's curtains for the project for WarCraft III. There's a good side and bad side to this though. Bad, all our WarCraft III fans don't get anything in return - not even a BETA. Good, we decide to give StarCraft II's Galaxy Editor a try to see if we can make a SC2:WoW instead of a WC3:WoW. Sorry to bring this nightmarish news to you guys.

Rip out Hard Drive, use external HDD case and get the files off of it there or put it into another computer as a 2nd Hard Drive and copy paste. If all else fails good old Safe-Mode.

Thanks. As for Safe-Mode, it won't load all the way - it freezes.

Why not access the hard drive using SLAX live cd and copy the files to a CD or a memory stick , then after you are sure that the mod files and other important files are secure try to fix the Windows installation. If you can not copy or edit files with SLAX Live CD you should use a module that enables editing for NTFS , FAT ect...

Well I Think its time for a Penguin to Clean up the Mess. Cause If you were able to Post this news You're able to download an Ubuntu Version of Desire. Or just use Unetbootin (Ya have to google it) to make a Live USB Thumbdrive. It Downloads configures and Installs Everything Automaticaly. Or if you don't want to boot into a Linux just use the Dr. Web Antivrus. Wich is also Selectable via Unetbootin.

I have no clue. It may be from downloading mods or visiting mod websites or something like that.

AVG. It's free and doesn't lag my PC, but seems to not really protect my PC as well as I'd like.

I have AVG free and it works just well for me. Do you have xp or vista? XP has a weaker system and viruses can just eat through xp like nothing. Vista has a stronger immunity to viruses but still can get screwed up.

Boot up linux CD and hey presto, you got everything back in just 5 minutes.

I feel you just can't be bothered with the mod any more, this is incredibly easy to fix.

This is not a publicity stunt or scapegoat to quit working on the mod. I would not just throw away years of work because I got tired of it.

Sorry to hear about the bad news. I would like to thank you for putting out the demo. At least it showed the concept viable. Thumbs up for that!
