Spine Crawler VideoNEW VIDEO: SPINE CRAWLERS VS HEADHUNTERS

Two Starcraft 2 Spine Crawlers, two Warcraft 3 Headhunters. Who do you think is going to win?

NOTE: After modeling each unit from scratch, we decided to have fun and make some aesthetic changes to the attack animations from Starcraft. We only changed the way the attacks themselves look. The range, damage, and timing are all left untouched.

Spine CrawlerDevelopment Tidbit:

The Spine Crawler has had the original Sunken Colony's subterranean tentacle attack returned! This was done in part because the limitations in Warcraft 3 that prevented us from animating an above-ground tentacle, but also because there's something a little more frightening about being whacked by what you can't see. The animation below shows the attack in closer detail:

The animation itself is great, but it NEEDS to be accelerated. At the moment it's too slow, and I myself (from looking at the animation) don't feel that it would do the same damage as what the Starcraft 2 animation could do.

I completely agree. Also, though this animation looks really good, I prefer the Starcraft version where you see more clearly what unit is being targeted...

I can't wait for this mod to be released!

That animation is almost impossible to achieve, so they have no choice but to use this.

It is a little unclear that a unit is being hit as it stands. In my humble opinion, less dust and a more visible striking end (Bigger? Red tipped?) may make it easier to see.

I think the dust is fine, just make it that the tentacle it self goes up higher. Also, perhaps it can check if the unit is biological then if the check returns true, then it can play a blood splatter variant of the original animation.

We do plan to tone down the dust and increase the violence, plus we've come up with an effect that'll hopefully help to see what the Spine Crawler is targeting better.

The blood splat bit we'll have to see about. We thought about it way, way back when, but there was some performance reason as I recall that forced us to drop it. I'll ask Nathan the coding guru why that was. =)
