The sky rendering in Vox has been updated to include a fully dynamic day/night cycle with background gradient. This makes the background much more visually appealing:

Gradient sky background1 Gradient sky background2

This can be enabled by the in-game options menu (press 'escape') and selecting 'Day/Night Cycle'.

The sky rendering also includes a sun and moon object and clouds and also during the night-time a star-field is rendered to make the night feel more visually appealing.

The day and night time ratio in Vox is as follows: one real life minute equals 2 hours in game time. So a full day 24 hour day in the game takes 12 minutes of playing time. This will later be adjusted and set to a more suitable scale that feels right for the game. There is also the possibility for certain parts of the day to take longer, so the player spends less time in the night phase of the game.

Other day and night features that are planned are:

  • Dynamic lighting objects that light up at night time. i.e different coloured torches, fireflies, glowing ores, etc.
  • Specific enemies that appear only at certain times of the day. (Night enemies are generally more difficult and deadly).
  • NPCs that react intelligently to the day/night cycle.
  • Weather affects and more dawn/dusk visual improvements.
  • Better cloud rendering.

I am very excited to hear that different colored lights will be possible. Will it be possible to make our own objects have their own color of light, or is that too difficult?

There will be dynamic light sources, if that is what you mean? For example at night time when you are carrying a torch, this will create light for you.

There will also be a 'torch' object that you can place in the world to make it lit up at night, similar in the way Terraria or Minecraft works.

I might add the ability for you to add light soruces to custom objects, so that you can make stuff like glowing weapons, or stuff like that.

I think he wanted to know if there will be a way to change the color of the lights (make a torch blue).
