They Hunger: Lost Souls has now entered alpha stage. All level development is finished and refined. We are now focusing on final resources and content, which basically means integrating scripting, dialogues, additional models and animations.

Sorry for the scarce updates, but we've just been too busy working on the game. It's coming along very nicely and we believe your patience will be rewarded! Further details about the game and additional screenshots are available at Blackwidowgames.com.

Also, we still have open positions for more modelers, animators, and skinners to help speed up development of the remaining models. Previous experience on Source is required. If you are interested, please send samples of your previous works to Neil Manke at "neil@blackwidowgames.com".

Oh well recon I'll pass it on then.
really enjoyed the original mods and this looks like quality stuff as well, but my days of paying directly for anything zombie related ended when I bought HL2 :P.

I'd buy it as long as it's packaged in stores, but I refuse to buy anything over Steam because, well, it's Steam.

I don't like the fact that the character models all appear to be slightly modified versions of the Half-Life 2 characters, but otherwise, the game looks ace.

So it's a mod, but you have to pay...

Right...

Actually I'm not quite sure why this is listed as a mod tbh. As much as I love Neil Manke (I'm talking 'in my pants' love with a restraining order thrown in for good measure!), this is self-advertised as a commercial game. Should it be technically getting free publicity from the ModDB? Fair's fair, afterall; you don't see CS:S, DoD:S or Sin Episodes getting free access to the ModDB readership. I'm sure the ModDB could get some sort of feature ready for They Hunger that's still relevant to the modding community, considering how Manke is a modder-turned-pro, but perhaps this is a bit premature.

crispy is right, this is a commercial game. the moddb profile and announcement is basically free advertising, i don't think there's anything wrong with that. i'm all for this getting as much publicity as possible and it being successful so more zombie related fun can be had by all.

Right, but this is a site for mods. And a mod = Not for profit.

As soon as people are paying for it, it's a commercial venture and our of the realm of modworks ...

cuz they make money doesn't mean they profit.. on WIKIPEDIA, they describe the difference between for-profit and non-profit organizations in that "most experts consider that it is the legal and ethical restrictions on the distribution of profits to owners or shareholders which fundamentally distinguishes nonprofits from commercial enterprises. A more precise term is 'not-for-profit', rather than 'nonprofit', and this is often used in legislation and texts. Nonprofits generally do not operate to generate profit, a characteristic widely considered to be the defining characterisitic of such organizations. However, a nonprofit organization may accept, hold and disburse money and other things of value. It may also legally and ethically trade at a profit. The extent to which it can generate income may be constrained, or the use of those profits may be restricted."

To quote Robert A Heinlein, "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch." You want a quality mod? quality takes time. programmers, coders, artists, writers, they're giving up THEIR time to make quality. some of them probably have other jobs. maybe they had to quit their jobs, so they could make this wonderful game for you. and then they ask for a little pittance, and suddenly the game is untouchable. you can't get everything for free. some people may be able to give up their time, and not ask for anything in return, but websites cost money. time costs money. detail costs money. quality costs money.

so if you have a problem with good games that you may need to pay a little money for, go and play the free games that you still somehow manage to criticize with descriptive terms and phrases like "this mod suckz."

but if you're mature, appreciate the work that went into the mod you're playing. appreciate the time and effort that it took to make the mod you're playing.

be grateful.

What a crock of overblown ****. There's TONS of high quality mods that have been released and are still in development which DO NOT demand a payment in order to play. So rather than breaking out the textbook on me with what qualifies "non profit" and "not for profit" why dont you pull your head out of your *** to see that Neil's endeavour stands quite alone in the "pay to play" mod world.

And no, it's not very endearing given how long I've worked on MY mod to bring it up to retail quality for it's second release.

Oh, by the way im not asking any players to pay me.

be grateful.

Squabbles aside, the issue is not whether TH:LS stands to profit or intends to profit, it's that it intends to charge for the game. By doing this they will have had to buy a commercial Source license from Valve. So at the end of the day They Hunger: Lost Souls is a commercial venture. It's in essentially the same situation as SiN Episodes, but I've not seen one news announcement from SiNE on this site to date.

So it's not about being grateful at all. I was grateful for Natural Selection so I made a donation. But if Natural Selection started charging to play the game I would still argue that they should no longer be listed on the ModDB, or at the very least that they should no longer be allowed to post front page news announcements. This site is about the modding community, and while the TH:LS serve as great inspiration for modders in general, they have since moved on from that and onto making games for a living.
