Part 2

Oh just a note on flares: Players have infinite flares, however they can only drop 3 flares at a time. So if they throw a fourth flare, their first flare instantly burns out. Basically they are only useful for lighting your immediate area.

What would power those lights? The city has been abandoned for years.

Well yes, it could suffer from the Doom 3 effect of "Over-Darkness", heck, even the creator of it said he wished he hadn't made it so dark post-release.

In that video I couldn't see what was going on most of the time, it only frustrates me, not scares me, and removes the atmosphere.

Perhaps add a glow-stick?

I like it the way it is, makes it seem more creepy by having third rate flares instead of top of line. Besides, all three do light up the room to me.

Though regarding other light sources, what about Military Style glowsticks? They could provide unlimited light with a faint green dim but due to their size a player could carry one.

Badass, though it'd be really nice to have animations for lighting up and tossing the flares, as well as new sound effects (the old default one just doesn't make it for me :[ )

Maybe it could work similarly to metro 2033, where you have to pump your flashlight (Leaving you free to attack) every so often, and the more power you have, the brighter it shines.
As for lighting up your immediate area, different types of flares would be cool (Fast burning, high light/vice verse). But maybe also have leftover campfires/flammables in certain places which can be lit permanently with a lighter/tinderbox.
